Ross Elliston | 6 comments Read this when I was about 8, so late 90s/early 00s. Kids' book, I'm pretty sure the author was a woman. Two books in the series as far as I can remember.
A brother and sister get sent to spend the summer with their two aunts, one of whom seems to do little except sit in a chair scratching at things. The siblings get sucked into a magical world (I think when they find an old diary) along with their cat, who can suddenly speak and is very sarcastic.
There's a horse made of water who is trapped in a puddle and a wizard who is a skeleton. At the end of the first book it turns out that their aunt is also a wizard and that the scratching was her adding things to her magic book.

Ross, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Ross Elliston | 6 comments Sadly I'm still looking. I've mentioned it to a few people and the geberal response is interest in the storyline but no ideas as to what it's called.

Ross, what's the real-world location - England/U.S./country, region?

Why are the siblings sent to their aunts for the summer? Where are their parents?

About how old are the kids and which one is older?

Ross Elliston | 6 comments Sorry guys, the above is all the detail I can remember bar some quote/detail snippets:
"You can read?" (to the cat)
"Yes, and I'd be much better at it if people wouldn't push me off their laps while I'm reading the newspaper."
And rhen something about a cloud spirit horse trapped in a puddle, an invisible staircase in midair and a mountain stream where one sip gives you a dream, two a nightmare etc.
It almost feels like a catherine fisher, but I knew that it isn't.

Ari | 39 comments It sounds like something by Eva Ibbotson but I could be wrong because she writes more stand alone books.

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments It sounds good - I'd like to read it.

Susan Dexter's The Ring of Allaire isn't about siblings but the sarcastic cat and a mysterious missing horse might fit?

Do any of the books on this old thread seem likely?

Ross Elliston | 6 comments Success! It's 'Spilling the Magic' by Stephen Moore - the sequel is called Fiddlesticks and Firestones, so my memory isn't as faulty as I thought. Many thanks one and all for the assistance!
