Everett Clark | 5 comments What I can remember: A spaceship leaves a planet behind ( maybe it's dying ) to colonize another world. Their consciousness is kept in stasis or storage during this long trip. The ship crashes on the planet with only one person ( maybe the capt.) surviving with his consciousness intact. The other passengers are like newborns at this point. The capt? teaches the others how to grow crops and survive and then he returns to cryogenic sleep. He wakes every 100 years or so to check on the groups progress and shape their society. That's all I can remember and part of that may be wrong... Any help?

Juliana (rainstorm22) | 4 comments Are they any of these (one comment in this thread has a list) https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

It reminds me of the "Remnants" series which this post is solved as (but I don't think that's it)

Everett Clark | 5 comments I checked those out and one did sound close but most of the story I’m looking for is about the civilization that grows from the survivors of the crash. Their consciousness (personality, all knowledge) was lost in the crash and never restored. The captain (not sure he was the captain) shaped the civilization and was thought to be a god after several hundred years as he would show up every hundred years or so and give instructions. Thanks again.

Possibly Earthseed?

Ket | 163 comments Sorry, major, huge spoilers here for The True Game Kings Blood Four/Necromancer Nine/Wizard's Eleven (Land of the True Game, #1-3) by Sheri S. Tepper but...

This plot is essentially the backstory in Sheri S. Tepper's The True Game: Kings Blood Four/Necromancer Nine/Wizard's Eleven. The elements of this series come about because the captain hasn't been restored from his cryogenic sleep on schedule and his brother assembles a team to wake him up to fulfill his goals for the society. No one on this planet knows they came from earth, but this guy's returning is mythical and mentioned often. It might not be your book because all of this info is serious backstory, mostly implied for the majority of the series. And when they first landed the crew were not like newborns, they lost their knowledge over time. Any chance...?

Everett Clark | 5 comments I checked those out but they don't seem to be it. Still reading and searching. Tana, the backstory does sound a lot like the plot, but the book I'm looking for is told from the survivors point of view entirely. He returns each time to visit new generations and advances in the society he created. Thanks again for all of the suggestions.

Do you remember anything about the new world -- features, geography, threats, unique animals or plants? Is the main story arc the point that gods are probably just people too, or was that incidental and the main arc was something else? When did you read the book? At the time you read it, do you have a sense of whether it was a new book or an older one? Would you say it was an adult book, YA, teen? Anything about the cover? Do you recall any significant events in the book -- for example, is there one instance where he wakes up but the people don't trust him/believe in him? Anything about how it ends?

Everett Clark | 5 comments The new world was a lot like earth, I don't remember anything about the new world that made it stand out. The group left to colonize the new planet and made the trip in stasis or cryogenic sleep with their consciousness (memory, who they were) stored separate from their bodies. The captain (only survivor with memory) woke to find that the consciousness of all the others were lost. This was a big part of the story as he explored and figured out what to do with the other survivors which were like toddlers and had no sense of who they had been. On one of his returns he found that one of the descendants had murdered which presented a huge problem. Each return presented new challenges as the group progressed and multiplied. The hero's attitude in the book was not to be like god but to insure the colony could survive. He didn't present himself as god but that's how the colony thought of him, but later generations came to know the truth. I read the book 20-25 years ago and it wasn't new at the time.

Ket | 163 comments Could it be Hot Sleep by Orson Scott Card?

Hot Sleep (Worthing, #2) by Orson Scott Card

"Jason Worthing is sent with 333 people to start a colony in deep space. However, when he arrives at his destination, he discovers that, as a result of a battle in space, the memories of all his colonists have been erased. Starting with 333 infants in adult bodies, Jason sets up a completely new kind of world. It all goes smotthly until the second generation learns to think for itself."

Everett Clark | 5 comments Tana, it does sound like it. I'm looking for a copy now, I'll let you know after I look through it. Thanks again for the info.

Everett, this sounds like the The Worthing Saga.

Everett, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Btw, _Worthing Saga_ and _Hotsleep_ are the same(ish). One's an omnibus edition with more stuff.

And the problems don't stop with the 2nd generation. He goes skipping merrily down the time-stream.
