Julia So... I don't know how many people know this, but Mockingjay Part 1 spurred/inspired/created rebellion in multiple places since its release last week, most famously Ferguson, Missouri and Thailand. People have been arrested for showing the three-finger salute, and others have graffiti-ed "If we burn, you burn with us" on local buildings. The movie has since been banned in multiple places, and it got me thinking... What about Part 2?
I understand that a lot happened in Part 1. Katniss is finally in District 13, and together they are trying to unite the districts against the Capitol. (MOVIE SPOILERS!) Francis Lawrence included uprisings against the Capitol in other districts, including 5 and 7. (DONE WITH MOVIE SPOILERS!) But that isn't the worst of it. Part 2 is really when the rebellion starts to get heavy. (BOOK SPOILERS!) At the end of the book, the Capitol falls, and Katniss is taken to execute President Snow but shoots Coin instead, and Snow dies. (DONE WITH BOOK SPOILERS though if you're in this discussion, I'm hoping you've read the book haha)
So... if Part 1 was banned in so many places, how is Part 2 going to happen? Where will it be banned? How well will it do in the box office (since I heard that Mockingjay Part 1 had the weakest opening of all the movies thus far)? What do you guys think?

TheJordynator3000 I know, I was at an assembly at school yesterday and a student gave the four-note whistle and the three-fingered salute. I don't think it was taken as a sign of rebellion, but it did get me thing along the same lines as you. To be honest, I don't think it will be much of a problem. Remember how in Part 2 SO MANY REBELS DIE, and it's up close and it's bloody. That may scare potentially protesters off. Also, I don't even understand why people are using it as a reason to rebel now. Considering the fact that America is a democracy, it's not even really fair to use our government in comparison to the Capitol. Maybe in other countires with more oppressing governments where rebellion is more likely to happen, it will be banned. But that may also just be due to the oppressing governments, banning it for the sake of banning it. I don't know, Part 1 was amazing in my opinion and shouldn't be used this way because it's FICTION. Same with Part 2, which I'm absolutely excited for.

Neha Someone on Tumblr posted that people are misjudging the rebel thing in Thailand. The protests were actually over, and the period right now is more like 'Post Mockingjay period' or 'like the end of Mockingjay', but since MJ Part 1 has released, some rebels are just showing off their glory and all. The Government has banned them because the country needs some peace right now, not another reason to protest, at least not for a movie!

Neha Just found her actual post, read on :)

Mockingjay ISN’T banned in Thailand, and the three finger salutes is misinterpreted.

**My dear followers: please read this** I don’t want to burden you but foreign media, get your facts straight!!** THANK YOU

Okay, guys, I just need to clear up the air. I’m from Bangkok, Thailand and Mockingjay Part 1 isn’t ban in theatres. Or else, I wouldn’t be seeing it for a 2nd time this week.

The reasons they took it down in some cinemas areas (only two-three areas) is because they’re afraid for the movie goers’ safety. Some people want to stir up political matters which ended awhile back. Like the three finger salutes: it may cause fights to break out in cinemas where families take their children to watch, I’m even worried about my own safety. How would you feel if you get injured from fights you don’t even want to be a part of?

News flash: Thailand is not currently in a civil war like what the Districts and Katniss are in now. We passed that phase already.

To compare, Thailand’s situation now is post-Mockingjay. Both sides, had won some and lost some. But the scars remain. And we’re trying to heal except some people still want to glorify the past that would help no one.

Ask me, which Thai political group portray the Capitol and which group is the rebellion? It’s hard to pinpoint. There were a mix of both from each side. For example, in the end, president Coin wasn’t that much different from President Snow… both used Katniss, both exploit the power the media has to offer, so, I hope you will understand this. It’s painful for us Thais, no matter which side we’re on.

We still have access to YouTube and Twitter, Instagram, news sites. Unlike China or Hong Kong which these social platforms have be (temporarily) banned. We still have our voices. I still laugh along with the Peetniss jokes and Joshifer moments.

So, get this: we are not brainwashed (surprise?) but we were in this political mess since 2007. And that’s a long time. It stains our country, our economic and our hearts. Most are tired and want to move on now.

Let us Thais watch Mockingjay and reflect on the metaphor and teachings of the movie in peace.

Thank you for reading this far. Thank you.

For those that reblogged, thank you as well.
