Roger Ebert's review of 'River Kwai'

'Bridge on the River Kwai' is my favorite movie (not just my favorite war movie or favorite action movie). My *favorite* movie, period.

For the most part Ebert's comments are adequately written, (uneven in places--it is not the duty of a review to re-tell the plot sequence-by-sequence!).

But the main issue is that I think he missed conveying the most important things he ought to have talked about.

Yep. Its that kind of experience. David Lean knew how to make movies; knew how to make films with feeling and spirit. He never had to rely on shaky-cam techniques to 'be cool'.

These days, clumsy oafs who attend super-hero movies, telling me I got to see the latest Marvel adaptation? There's an Adam Sandler movie I need to see? Pshaw! I wanna knock their heads together. Dumb clucks who sit there playing on their cellphones as much as they raise their eyes to the screen. These frat-boys supposedly have taste and judgment these days, yeah right..of course all the reviewers and critics pander right to them; so nowadays the new yardstick for a great flick is something like...ehh, 'Fast and Furious'. Sheesh!

Hey Double! A flick from Japan with similar themes as Kwai: 'The Burmese Harp'. Ever seen it?

Meanwhile: 'Fires on the Plain'--not as good. Deals with cannibalism, awk.

Stacey B | 117 comments Felix- You are correct on your opinion of "The Burmese Harp" Loved it. Who is Adam Sandler again?? :)

Stacey B | 117 comments Always looking for a new film to see. I'm guessing by the title of "Fires on the Plain" the crux if this is BBQ humans for survival? Cant deal with cannibalism, so that's a will not see film.

Thanks Stac. 'Fires on the Plain' is about the survival of Japanese soldiers trying to return to their units, from the jungles of SE Asia. But no, the 'fires' (lol) refers to the cooking fires of the homes they left behind; their wives and their kitchens.

There's no actual scenes of anything grisly; but in general it is a tough and wrenching flick with a lot of desperate-looking characters and gaunt, starved, figures.
