message 9: by Charity (new)

Charity Awsome

message 10: by Cara (new)

Cara | 3 comments Horowitz's terrible arrogance in interviews have kept me away from this pastiche so far. I'd be thrilled to read it with a group though :)

message 11: by Angela (last edited Dec 16, 2014 08:52PM) (new)

Angela Rodriguez | 1 comments I have read The House of Silk and must say it isn't bad at all. In fact, the plot centers on an issue that is somewhat relevant today.

message 12: by Noah (new)

Noah | 7 comments Al and I are doing a BR reread of "A Study in Scarlet". Feel free to join us. This is an edition illustrated by Gris Grimly, but you can use anything you can find. :)

It's probably too late to join in on this ... where are you discussing it?

message 14: by David YB (new)

David YB Kaufmann (dybkaufmann) | 3 comments I'd also like to get into the discussion. I'm rereading all the short stories right now.

message 15: by Rich (new)

Rich Griese (richgriese) | 4 comments Not to sound like a total novice, but what exactly is a "group read". Is it some kind of Googlely hangout then where people read actual parts real time... or is it more low tech like, everyone read A Study in Scarlet this month, and we'll talk about it.

Cheers! RichGriese.NET

message 16: by Al (new)

Al | 3 comments Well, i dunno how this group does a Buddy Read, but often people chat after every chapter, or when they want to.

Noah | 7 comments A STUDY IN SCARLET by Arthur Conan Doyle BR

“Dr. Watson's summary list of Sherlock Holmes's strengths and weaknesses:

1. Knowledge of Literature: Nil.
2. Knowledge of Philosophy: Nil.
3. Knowledge of Astronomy: Nil.
4. Knowledge of Politics: Feeble.
5. Knowledge of Botany: Variable. Well up in belladonna, opium, and poisons generally. Knows nothing of practical gardening.
6. Knowledge of Geology: Practical but limited. Tells at a glance different soils from each other. After walks has shown me splashes upon his trousers, and told me by their colour and consistence in what part of London he had received them.
7. Knowledge of Chemistry: Profound.
8. Knowledge of Anatomy: Accurate but unsystematic.
9. Knowledge of Sensational Literature: Immense. He appears to know every detail of every horror perpetrated in the century.
10. Plays the violin well.
11. Is an expert singlestick player, boxer, and swordsman.
12. Has a good practical knowledge of British law.”

― Arthur Conan Doyle, A Study in Scarlet

Rich Griese (richgriese) | 4 comments FYI, you can listen to the Librivox audio reading of A Study in Scarlet right on YouTube here. I find listening to audio reading in my rocking chair after dinner a relaxing way to end the day. Perhaps other that never thought of the idea might as well.

Enjoy Life! RichGriese.NET
