SOLVED. girl from vienna, strict school,emerald/gem name in the title? Medieval/fantasy setting [s]

This is a young adult book I read maybe six or seven years ago when I was in middle school.
I think the girl's mother came back and sent her to a very strict school. It's has a medieval/fantasy setting. There was something to do with an emerald or gem or treasure. I remember her being in Vienna. She walked up a hill for some reason at one point and there might have been a baby.

When you say the girl's mother came back -- came back from where, do you know? A few others things that might spur some memories: do you recall how old the girl was? Since she was in Vienna, I assume this was fantasy set in our world, not another world? Do you recall the general tone of the book: humor, romance, adventure? How long was the book -- short, medium, long, doorstop?

I think she came back from having left her when the girl was little? Either that or her mother was rather absent. The girl was 12/13/14 ish.

The book seemed longish novel length. Maybe just 300 pages though. It was large and hardcover.

I don't remember it being humorous, just adventure. I don't think it was necessarily fantasy...maybe just set in the middle ages.

Sounds like The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson

A girl is left at a church as an infant and raised in Vienna by a Cook and a housemaid. She befriends an elderly lady who leaves her valuable jewellery in her will.
Her mother comes to Vienna and takes her to Germany. (I remember more of the plot but don't want to add spoilers just in case).
