I finally found it. Darkangel by Meredith Anne Pierce
This book I did recall got a sequel.
All I can remember is this girl gets captured by what she learns is a young prince who had been cursed either by his mother or some queen. he wore a necklace of some kind or there was a necklace of some kind. I think there was like a bunch of vials on it? Something happens and she discovers he isn't a monster but a cursed prince and leaves him in order to try and break it. I recall her crossing some desert/flying with the aid of a creature?
It has been so long and I wish I could provide more information than that. It felt like a twist on the beauty and the beast plot because the cursed prince has a foul temper.
