I didn't consider the first book romantic suspense either. There was a dead body but the book was too light for me to consider it romantic suspense.
Then under that logic, none of them should be in the series. Disagree. The story of the Twitter terrorist builds from book 2 to book 3 (so those are really connected) and you have either the same FBI agents/US attorneys going from book to book. In this one, with the exception of the best friend, JJ could have changed the name of all the people who made cameo appearances and nobody would have noticed they were supposed to be the same characters from previous books because there was no background on them whatsoever. Meaning, the FBI friend could have been called Bill and you wouldn't have known it was supposed be Vaughn because there was no mention of his story (with the exception that he was engaged) or even his personality. He just showed up, said a few lines and left. He could have been anybody.
Now, the female best friend was another matter, but as her story wasn't even mentioned, that made sense to me. But then, I'm not that OCD. In general I read books in order but it only bothers me when the stories are really interconnected. If past couples just make cameo appearances to show how happy they are, then it doesn't matter to me. I can read in any order.
Again, D.G., my comment is intended for those who feel character continuity matters. Ford also appeared in an earlier book. As you acknowledge you're not that OCD about reading in order, this may seem inconsequential and you've made your point. We will have to agree to disagree as I would be upset reading this book out of order.
Oh sorry! I was just trying to express my opinion. From now on, I'll keep my mouth shut when I have a different POV.
Not understanding your reaction. You disagreed pretty strongly with my point of view and I'm just adding more context. Your opinion has value for those who share it. I just know others who follow this series and have similar feelings about the level of character continuity.

Interesting because for me it was definitely romantic suspense with the killer stalking the heroine and several attempts on her life.

That was one of my favorite parts of the story. James's dialogue is one of the best aspects of her writing and why I've continued with the series even though I'm not as fond of straight contemporary romance as I am of RS.

When you said above "Again, D.G., my comment is intended for those who feel character continuity matters", I felt that you were asking me to stop sharing my opinion because I didn't agree with you. Maybe that's not what you meant, but that's how I read it.
At the end though, you're right, we can agree to disagree.
DEFINITELY not my intent!! I loved this discourse as we both feel strongly about our points of view and this felt healthy. When we reached an impasse, meaning neither was persuading the other to shift opinions, I felt it necessary to just end it and clarify the audience for which my comments were intended.
One last comment, though, if I may.
The impetus for me even making the comment was after reading the umpteenth review where statements were made that while the book was not part of the series (and some even saying it was), there was character connection. FictFact even has it listed as #6, which I think is wrong as the author has steadfastly declared it's not for the reason I stated above. I believe this decision has caused confusion, IMO.

I read
Skin Game by Jim Butcher. The series is back on track with the 15th book in the series. My rating: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Great reviews, Jonetta!
Jonetta wrote: "Haven't a clue when I can start Jane Yellowrock. Glad to see you're still enjoying the series. ..."I really am enjoying it. It's a good series. Khristine Hvam is my favorite narrator, but I sometimes listen to this series at 1.25x or 1.5x speed. She does a great Southern accent, but it can be real languid at times (which is perfect for a Southern accent, but these books are long). And Faith Hunter doesn't leave a single detail out, lol.

I know I've said it before, but don't judge the rest of the series on this book :)

I did like it for the most part. There is just one part that really bothered me, and it took the rating down a bit.
Tracey, this series just gets better and better! You will really like the books that follow.
What I'm really enjoying about this story is how unconventional it is for an historical romance set in England. I haven't a clue as to where it's going!

Thanks to both of you and others for championing this series. If this first book is the weakest, I'm in for a treat as I'm really enjoying Temperance and Lazarus.

I finished
last night and while I loved the heroine and the LCR crew I could not really get myself to like the hero and the storyline. I will save the rest for discussions.
I've dragged my feet on starting this one. There is something about the hero that doesn't pull me in.
I am starting Seduced (book #1 Into the Wild) by Molly O'Keefe. I love this author's contemporary romance, so I'm looking forward to this historical western romance (which I haven't read much of).

I finished Wicked Intentions by Elizabeth Hoyt, Maiden Lane #1, and I'm hooked on a new series! This book wasn't without its issues but was still an interesting read, especially the strong secondary character setups. Thanks, all!
I'm now reading Ignited by Kaylea Cross, Titanium Security #1, and it's already wicked good.
