Beauty and the Beast was my favorite in the series. I also liked A Kiss at Midnight and a novella called Winning the Wallflower. I didn't care for either The Ugly Duchess or Seduced by a Pirate.

I have no idea why I stalled on this series. I enjoyed the first book, too.

Thanks, Robin! I think I'll try A Kiss at Midnight. I just signed up for the Scribd free trial and they have the whole series. I'm like a kid in a candy store ;).

@Erin - I've read the whole series except for the last book. When Beauty Tamed the Beast (Fairy Tales, #2) by Eloisa James was my favorite. I also enjoyed A Kiss at Midnight (Fairy Tales, #1) by Eloisa James and The Duke Is Mine (Fairy Tales, #3) by Eloisa James although many others didn't like that one. I actually almost chucked it in the beginning because there is a scene that made me angry but I ended up really liking it by the end. I didn't like The Ugly Duchess (Fairy Tales, #4) by Eloisa James - the hero is a real jerk.

message 656: by Monica (new)

Monica | 860 comments @Erin - I'll second what both Lauren and Robin said. A Kiss at Midnight, The Duke Is Mine, and Winning the Wallflower are all good. I also did not care for The Ugly Duchess or Seduced by a Pirate (mostly because the latter was only a novella and I think to tell the story satisfactorily it should have been a full-length).

Monica | 860 comments I finished The Secrets of Sir Richard Kenworthy by Julia Quinn. This book was not as light or humorous as her others in the series. There was still humor, just not as much as I've come to expect. But I did really like the heroine and mostly liked the hero. Also, I just finished a series! Yay for me.

I'll throw in my two cents here: I read and enjoyed The Ugly Duchess (Fairy Tales, #4) by Eloisa James
quite a lot. In fact, it was one of my favorite books that year.

I'm glad you said this because I went back to look at my rating and I actually loved The Ugly Duchess as well (5 stars). It was Once Upon a Tower I was not so crazy about (3.5 stars). I should have double checked titles first!

D.G. I've only read two books in the Fairy Tales series: A Kiss at Midnight (Fairy Tales, #1) by Eloisa James was just OK for me but loved When Beauty Tamed the Beast (Fairy Tales, #2) by Eloisa James .

I think the consensus is that the series is uneven. Most people love #2 but they are on the fence about the rest.

Interesting question, Jonetta. It would make sense if that were the case. It's just my luck that I was a fairy tale junky when I was young so I'll probably love them all ;).

Cinderella has always been one of my absolute favorite fairy tales so I have high hopes for A Kiss at Midnight! I keep thinking back to the Bridgerton book that had a Cinderella theme to it and how much I loved it. Was it Benedict's book? I can't seem to recall which it was now.

I agree, D.G. The opinions are varied and that makes this series all the more intriguing to me. Lol! That we all loved When Beauty Tamed the Beast makes sense to me. What a great story that was! :)

Currently I'm reading A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James and listening to One Summer by Karen Robards.

Monica | 860 comments I just finished Beautiful Redemption by Jamie McGuire and I while I enjoyed it for the most part, I was so disappointed in the main male character. He comes from this bad-ass family of all boys and he was not the strong, alpha-male that he was set up to be in the last book. But the MC wasn't my favorite either. She was strong, but also abrasive and prickly. It was hard to like her. Overall I liked the story, it was just hard to connect with the characters. But I still love that Maddox family.

Finished listening to Truth by Aleatha Romig, Consequences #2. This is the most bizarre trilogy I've ever read/listened to. Mixed feelings but it certainly hooked me. Here's my review.

I need to get caught up on the Lux series. I really enjoyed the audio on the first few and would like to continue in this format but I don't want to pay full price for those audios so my current strategy is to pout about it for a while after which I will surely give in and buy them anyway :).

Monica | 860 comments I just started a new series, the first book is Written in Red by Anne Bishop and I am really enjoying it. I have been leery of starting any series with shifters or vampires, or anything paranormal really, just because I felt like it was all becoming so redundant. Not the case here.

Well, I haven't really gotten too much of vampires in this yet. I'm not sure what the rest of the book will hold, but so far they are pretty much in the background.

D.G. Written in Red is really different sort of UF - now that I think about it, I think that's how I started my review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... (no spoilers)

I totally recommend it.

message 689: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I finished Crocodile on the Sandbank and ended up loving it! What a romp! There wasn't too much of a mystery but the shenanigans of these characters were so funny. I loved Amelia and Emerson, they are such a great couple...and what a "courtship". This is one of those books where the couple bicker a lot but they were so funny together. He couldn't have been more perfect for her.

Anyhow, I loved it so much that I immediately started The Curse of the Pharaohs but had to spend a credit because my library only has the version narrated by an American. I mean really, why have an American narrator (narrating with American accent, no less) where pretty much everybody in the book is British?

I love this series. There are similar community themes to VR but it's almost more contemporary fiction. There are several storylines in play, generally, in each story. The couples tend to be older, several single parents. It's a wonderful series.
