Introduction:
There were many clans of thieves operating in one town. Book begins with assassination attempt against one of the clan heads, thwarted by his son. (who likes to watch his father from the shadow, for some reason).
Cut to several years later. That son and a girl run into each other while doing separate robberies. Fearing an assassin, he attacks.
(At this point I remember a specific line here. After he tries to kick between her legs, she thinks "He must have assumed his attacker was a guy")
They end of escaping form the guards together. He struggles because of an injured leg. He realizes her thievery potential (and has started to develop a crush on her) and takes her back to his dad's clan to become part of their order of thieves.
Small spoilers ahead
At one point he buys her a ring. Dad sees it and get really angry. He dosen't want her 'tanning' his son, who he's trying to shape into the perfect heir. Later the dad sends his son off to some creepy religious people who try to 'fix' him with some weird magic hypnosis. There was something about a red blood lion, I think.
He ends up escaping and meeting hiding with a street urchin. She sees the crazy evil priests and gets scared, prays to her god. At this point he has a revelation of sorts that not all religions are bad. He resolves to find a good deity. to believe in.
One of the characters in the book was a guy called worm. He was useful for information and he could also actually turn into a worm.
SPOILIERS AHEAD!
Near the end of the book, thieves correlate to both assassinate the king and rob his villas on the same night. The assassination consists of a group of private dancers, one of whom has a poisoned needle up their sleeve. It's thwarted by a vigilant steward.
The robbery fails too. Several clans had plans to betray each other. The plans are leaked, and they turn on each other mid-robbery. Results in many dead and others being trapped inside a fire.
