Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11205 comments 25.3 -- Mrs.soule's task: Two Types of Tasks

I’ve noticed there tend to be two different kinds of tasks for the SRC reading challenge – tasks that are wide open enough to let you read what you wanted to read already and tasks that are much more limiting and force you to read something you’d never have opened otherwise. I tend to enjoy the first type much more – until the second type leads me to my new favorite book! So in honor of SRC tasks through the years, I’m giving you one of each type:

This is a TWO book task. Read a book from A AND a book from B.

Book A: This is your “wide-open” task. Read a free-for-this-challenge book – this can be a library book, a free ebook, a book you got as a gift, or a book you already owned before December 1, 2014.
REQUIRED: State the source of the book when you post.

Book B: This is your limited task. Read a book from my Goodreads five-star shelf.

Re-reads, graphic novels, and children's books that otherwise meet SRC requirements are allowed for this task.

Ms.soule (mrssoule) For Book A, a borrowed book is fine as well!

message 3: by Ms.soule (last edited Feb 19, 2015 10:50AM) (new)

Ms.soule (mrssoule) Quick note about Book B:
If you dig through my other shelves and find a book I rated 5 stars that fits SRC requirements and is not on the shelf, let me know and I’ll add it in. I also tried to check all the children's books against the AR Bookfinder to make sure they’re allowed, but double check to be sure (you'll need the AR rating for posting anyway). Good luck!

Update if you're interested or looking for a book last minute:
The most popular books for Option B from my 5-star shelf are
Angels' Dance (Guild Hunter, #0.4) by Nalini Singh The Rosie Project (Don Tillman #1) by Graeme Simsion Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty Saga, Volume 1 (Saga #1-6) by Brian K. Vaughan Bossypants by Tina Fey The Martian by Andy Weir

♞ Pat Gent | 786 comments Awesome! I had one last "really want to read this" book left to slot for this challenge, and now I get to do it!

I'm happy, happy, HAPPY!

Did I mention that I'm happy? Well, I am. Happy, I mean.

message 9: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (pamela3265) | 952 comments I was excited see severall books that I love on your list including The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery . That is my all-time favorite book and I usually re-read it each year. However, in the spirit of the task, I will choose another book that I haven't read. I may find a new favorite!

Teri-K Task 1: I'm happy to have a place to put a book I recently found in a box in my spare room that just won't quite fit anywhere so far. :)
Task 2: Just to clarify, the book for task 2 doesn't have to be new to us? You don't state that anywhere.

Thanks.

ETA - Nevermind, someone points out you state rereads are OK. I lost that last line when I cut-and-pasted.

message 11: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments she says re-reads are ok

message 12: by Pia (new)

Pia Love this task... I have quite a few books on my TBR pile that didn't fit other tasks, and your 5 star books have tons of good options to read. Thank you!!!

message 13: by Teri-K (new)

Teri-K So she does. I somehow cut that part out when I copied and pasted it into my file. Thanks for pointing that out to me!

Absolutely do the AudioBook for Bossypants!! To me, that added to it to hear Tina Fey narrate it as well!

message 17: by Cheri (new)

Cheri (jovali2) For the free book, may a borrowed book be used?
Thanks!

message 18: by Ms.soule (new)

Ms.soule (mrssoule) Yes, borrowed is fine.

Dee, where do you get your audibles from? I use to get them from my library but we moved to a smaller area and the library here has very few titles.

message 22: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments i do audible.com - its a subscription service - i get 2 credits a month, which are 2 books - but they also have awesome sales - I picked up the entire in death series for $6 an audiobook (compared to the normal $20)

they have a $4.95 sale going on right now for cyber monday - with 500+ titles

Mrs. Soule,

If your old library is on Overdrive, you can use the old library card to still borrow through that (ebooks/audios). I have my old WV library card hooked up to it as well as my new card I got after moving to MD.

It has opened up a lot of options for me, especially since I can find books with less holds to wait through in WV a lot of the time.

It's worth checking out. I've also bumped into a few other systems that are used which are similar. A friend in Baltimore has access to books in the same way on her phone through a different app, so it doesn't hurt to ask. I contacted the library system I was familiar with in WV and they helped me reset my PIN (something required with them) so that I could still borrow digitally. Anything to boost circulation numbers I guess!

I loved the Overdrive collection of my old library - and I used it until my card expired. With the VA Beach system (where I used to live), you have to update your account with a current photo ID once a year - so I couldn't keep using it. :( I am thinking of paying the yearly fee for Charlotte's out-of-area library card so I can access their Overdrive.

Papermaker | 144 comments I'm now paranoid after not having understood a task correctly, I wanted to make sure I can(!) read the graphic novel Saga for part two of this task.

message 30: by Ms.soule (new)

Ms.soule (mrssoule) Yes, the Saga vol. 1 on my shelf can be used for this task. Good luck on staying off the Board of Shame. ;-)

Mhairi | 348 comments Hi, I'd just like to double check that my book fits the rules for option 1. It's a graphic novel I received as a gift.
Yiddishkeit: Jewish Vernacular and the New Land

Thanks. :)

Yes, graphic novels are fine for this task as long as they're 100 pages or more per SRC rules.

message 37: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristilarson) | 548 comments I feel like my question has already been answered, but I just want to be sure. I'm going to use the first volume of Saga for Book B. Since it says graphic novels are allowed for this task, can I also submit one for Book A? I borrowed the second volume from a friend.

message 38: by Ms.soule (new)

Ms.soule (mrssoule) Yes, graphic novels are fine for both tasks. Enjoy!
