Simone is a 600-year-old vampire with the body and appearance of a fifteen-year-old girl. She lives in present-day Brooklyn with her adoptive parents, who are also vampires. There’s no complex social structure for vampires, no detailed lore, shadow government, none of that, just an endless lifetime of keeping a low profile, feeding as minimally as possible, and generally, enduring endless boredom.
Simone explains the ins and outs of her daily (nightly) life, and indicates that it’s just not what the movies would lead you to believe. She’s incredibly lonely but doesn’t see a way out. She has grown fond of a boy she’s fed off of several times in a row (she hangs around various Goth clubs and takes what she needs in dark corners), but she’s put on the spot when she sees another boy at the club – one whom she first met 300 years ago, when she turned him into a vampire. It soon becomes obvious that he doesn’t have her best interests in mind…
How she deals with these two boys makes up the rest of the story, along with some insights she gains into her parents’ lives…
