Historical romance probably published by Avon in late 90's. Could have been by Elizabeth Thornton, Julia London or similar. The heroine is a spy, the hero does not know this and sets in place a chain of events that put her in danger. At some stage in the book he is captured and she has to question him in front of [I think] French soldiers. I know he was tied to a chair and she was circling round him as she questioned him but was trying to make him understand she was on his side.

Which of the many battles with the French was this set in? French and Indian Wars era, Colonial, Napoleonic, WWII?

I think the book was either to do with smuggling French aristos out of France or the Napoleonics.

there is a series with female spies by Andrea Pickens but probably not old enough

No, it wasn't her. I think she wrote Mills and Boon/Ballentyne type historical novels. I'm reasonably certain the book I'm looking for was written by one of the Avon authors. Also, widening the search, I would say this book was on sale between 1998 and 2006 ish.

It has a very similar storyline but BA is not the one I'm thinking of. However it could be one of her other books - I'm checking them!
