If you had to choose, who would you pick, Cal or Maven?

I finished the series a while ago, so my info might be off a bit buttttt

I LOVED MAVEN. ABSOLUTELY. And I still remain rooting for him even after the last book T_T. Maybe it's me with my attraction to dark, moody boys with daddy/mommy issues, but I really felt Maven's pain throughout the book. The poor, broken boy, I JUST WANTED HIM TO FIND SOLACE AND HAVE A HAPPY (or decent) ENDING.

He's a lot more alike to Mare than Cal ever was, being the second child, the one that wasn't expected to become something greater. Their minds were both sharp, away from delusions (or so it seemed) of royalty and power, believing in something bigger, something better for the future. He's cunning, he doesn't just push through headfirst into situations with his fists, the way Cal does.

He also kept his temper a loooot better than Cal. Though they both had fiery ones, Maven turned his fury into something more, using it as motivation to push towards his goal, whereas Cal was much more stubborn and refused to bend towards other decisions from his own, finding it EXTREMELY difficult to compromise. Maven's tongue lent to his diplomat skills, in the game of balancing his kingdom's power in his own hands. He proved an incredible strategist, given his solitary hold on the crown. Brains over brawn?

He tried SO hard to make amends with Mare. They spent so much more time with one another and thoroughly understood each other, unlike with Cal. God, the arguments that Mare and Cal would always get into, both unyielding, but steadfast in their belief that their choice was the right one. If only the circumstances were different, then maybe Maven and Mare could've had something more, even with Cal competing on the side.

I truly believed that Mare could've "fixed" him. That she could show him that he wasn't just his mother's child, that he really was different. Because, after all, he had the potential to turn the game around from the harsh divisions between Reds and Silvers. Call me a sap, but I believe that if he were only shown true love again, he could've broken through the bars of the cage his mother locked him in.

And while I bashed Cal in this, I do love his character too; he's an incredible person. He's just the golden boy that everyone wants and can't have. He's so distant and grew too tangled in the callings of the crown. And he's very unlikely to bend away from those ideals drilled into his head (he's a soldier, after all, and what good is a soldier without discipline?). He and Mare could never have worked out without destroying each other. And thus, I just think that Maven would've been better for Mare.

Maven all the way

So Maven is my favorite character, and Cal is my second favorite. I love Maven but I prefer Cal and Mare's relationship. I hate seeing toxic relationships in books and that's what Maven and Mare were. Cal and Mare are the superior couple but Maven is a better character.

Laura Snider I 100% agree.

Spoilers ahead....
I’ve finished all the books. At the very beginning of Red queen I was Cal all the way but then Mare met Maven and I liked him so much more I didn’t even see the plot twist coming....

Even as he became the antagonist we learnt more about him, like why he is the way he was. He was under the influence of his mother couldn’t grow and develop like everyone else. I felt so bad for him and I was hoping at the end of war storm (when maven tried to escape in the tunnels) mare would’ve chose him. Once I found out that he died I couldn’t stop crying. Maven forever!!!

Warning spoilers...
At fist i thought maven thinking he was a really kind despite being HIS MOTHERS SON but at the plot twist i gave up on him. Cal all the way

Personally I can’t choose I’d stay I prefer mavens personality but due to circumstances I’d also have to say cal. Maven may have betrayed and controlled mare in most of the books but deep down he is sweet and kind natured which has been corrupted by his mother and her ability. On the other hand cal has mostly always been there for except when he choose the crown over her and always protected her in anyway he could, he truly loves her. However he has a somewhat bland personality and is to stubborn, serious and aggressive for my liking

Maven. I feel like Maven was a victum who if she had stayed with might have changed the ways his mother shoved into his head as a child. He had the makings of a greater king then Cal ever did and proved it several times, such as the many times when he managed to make the revolutionaries look like the villians.

Dana I never thought of it that way but now that you say it is true, Maven wan an impressive leader, who, besides making some not so great decisions based ...more

In the beginning, I loved Cal! He helped Mare in the start, gave her a job, saved her family, basically. I was SO ANGRY when it was declared that she was going to marry Maven. But then, I saw Maven for what he truly was (or what we thought he was). I was 100% Maven all the way, he was much kinder than Cal, and had less of a temper. When Maven betrayed Mare I actually cried. That was an amazing twist of the author's--I never saw it coming. So, clearly, I am Team Cal. How can I be anything else?

this is such a hard decision. honestly, I has major problems with each of them!
first of all, Cal. He is set up from the beginning to be the "it" character. He is the older brother, next in line, powerful flame and incredibly handsome. He meets mare and gets her a job, gives her the money and supports her when she finds out what she is. He also follows her out of the castle and helps her recruit new red bloods to fight. BUT he gives up everything for a chance at power. Which is exactly the same thing that maven did (plus cal didn't have a mother who has basically forcing him to do it) and cal does not get hated on for that!! there are such sweet scenes between mare and cal, like when he taught her to dance, or all the many moments shared at the bunker, and of course all the time he has her back in battle. But, he was also really problematic.
AND then maven. sweet maven. I think everyone wants him to be the boy from the first book. I think truly he is that boy, but his mind was sooo messed up. You could see him throughout the series pushing back against his own mind and trying to figure out who he is himself. Everyone gives him too much hate for what he does. But look at it this way, he does anything he can to have mare because she is the one thing in his mind that he feels he has control over. she is the one thing that he loves, that he feels for, that he knows is his choice.
so basically such a hard decision, but I think I would have to go with cal because at least he didn't put her in prison for months

TEAM CAL

Yoooo I use to LOVE Maven but seriously??? You can't choose him. He is literally an abusive douchebag! Unless you want Mare in a toxic relationship, it's Cal! I know he's not the best choice but there are only 2 options here so

cal.

I would choose Cal, and I'll be honest I finished Warstorm recently but I read the other ones a while ago so I should definitely give it reread. I remember really liking Cal of the bat, and I never had much interest in Maven. I never really liked him with Mare to begin with, and while I have sympathy for him because of everything he went through, Cal intrigued me most. Maven and Cal were both raised to be so different, and I do see the cons of both of those relationships, but Cal had good intentions throughout the whole series. While he didn't always make good choices, he still tried to do what he thought was best. However Maven got to a point where he knew what he was doing was wrong, and didn't care. ( this is simply how I interpret it ) .

Depends on the book for me. I actually really liked Maven at first, but after Red Queen...he came off really weird, idk.
Cal just seems like a nicer person but Maven is a much more interesting character to read about.

I just finished the first book! I liked Maven so much but I can't believe what he did in the end!! I'm so shocked rn omg!!
So of course after this I'm team Cal!

Maven ! I feel like he could have been saved if he never was shown the footage of cal and mare dancing 😢( maybe )

Maven all the way 100%. I am still rooting for him even after the ending of the first book T^T

Maven all the way. Even though he was bad..it wasn't his fault. I NEVER LIKED CAL!

^^ what she said! Like, Cal really had the nerve to sEdUcE Mare while she was engaged to his own brother! No wonder Maven always thought Cal gets everything and that he's just the shadow :(

Although, after the plot twist Mareaven quickly became toxic, but their chemistry and scenes together were so entertaining! Maven stayed my favourite throughout the series and his end killed me.

Maven!!!! Forever Maven!!! He's such a sad man but is such a better character than Cal. And mavens and mare just seem like they're made for each other in some strange insane attraction

*whispers* Can I just choose Kilorn?

Maven! I feel like if Cal didn't kiss Mare that night they would have been a thing. And I hated how Mare didn't stop Cal either *Rolls eyes* I could see why Maven was pissed! Cal has and gets everything! Including his girl!

I preferred Cal, the whole Maven thing is extremely complicated and he betrayed and played with her. I think the most stand up guy who cared about her was her friend from the village before she had the accident. He was there throughout the whole thing and didn't really do bad things. he put his life in danger for something he believed in.
but yeah.. if I had to choose Cal because Maven was really cruel and Abusive both mentally and physically.

I liked Cal better. I mean Maven betrayed Mare.

Is this a question??? Cal of course!

Cal all the way

Maven! I get he was toxic... but I feel like Cal and Mare is the worse combo. They don't really understand each other and their relationship feels very surface level. Maven is more interesting at least.

SPOILERS
In terms of the canon story Mare said she chose Maven at the end of RQ. And I truly think they would have been the stronger pair IF Elara hadn't messed up Maven's head so much. But if you've read all the series you know that's one of the "dead" futures. By being a vile piece of shit even after his mom's death, Maven pushes Cal to become an actual good guy, and pushes Mare into his arms.
TL,DR The way things are in canon, there's no choice to make. Maven is horrible towards Mare. He hurts her in every possible way (Not a recipe for a healthy relationship)

okay but cal is superior... oof

Cal, of course

From about halfway in the novel I could tell that Maven was going to betray Mare. I'm not sure if it was obvious or I'm just familiar with the signs in books - I mean, "Mare and Cal" sounds way better than "Mare and Maven". Either way, it was kinda annoying and dampened the excitement for me. I've only read the first book but in terms of Cal and Maven, I'd choose Cal. Maven is like a pathetic version of Dorian from tog.

I would have stayed with Maven since they were put together for marriage, I really like easy solutions and, in my opinion, Maven was the easy and enjoyable solution to the triangle.

Of course that if she had chosen Mavey the plot wouldn't have gone in the direction that the author wanted, but I always imagined that if I was in Mare's situation I wouldn't have a doubt about choosing Maven. He's just a really catchy character :P

One does not ask that😩😭😭😭😅 I just loveddd how all the characters were very well written ❤️

OF COURSE TIBERIAS CALORE

Buah, la verdad es que al principio Maven me cautivó, pero luego me enamoré de Cal y estaba enamorada de los dos. Pero después de los últimos capítulos sentí muy fuerte la traición de Maven. Así que, creo que me quedaría con Cal.

First I was not sure. But at the end it would be clear to me: Maven. :)

Maven 100%. Never really liked Cal.

MAVEN!! (spoilers) maven no matter what tried to be with her and cal in king's cage just abandoned her willingly. i mean. if you really loved or care for, someone, you wouldn't do that . and cal never really cared for mare or his brother as much as the crown and that shouldn't happen in love even if you think that is what was best and he still didn't want to kill sivers but didn't mind killing reds and even tho he says those are orders he still could have tried to feel some remorse for the reds. and maven stopped at nothing to get her back till his death. and that line "i like the hair"i almost died. cal did trie to get her back from a king's cage and did with Monfort buts he didn't hesitate to take that crown. soooo. MAVEN!! (less)

MAVEN!! (spoilers after this) From the time when Cal "teaching" Mare to dance in that night, I already dislike him. Like, she is your fucking brother's fiance:((
