Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Are you talking about using such widgets for college-level? Then I can tell you flat-out, not to get any such device. That's not the way to get through any serious or challenging coursework which may be facing you. These gadgets promote execrable study habits; they erode focus and concentration. You don't want distractions like email or internet when you're trying to absorb information. They are atrocious encumbrances for the serious student.

Maggie When my daughter was a senior in high school all the students were given a Kindle Fire that they were supposed to use for school work. It was an absolute failure. The students and teachers hated it. In her class by the end of September no one was using the Kindle in school.

Feliks (dzerzhinsky) Mighty glad to hear an anecdote like that. Perhaps there's hope for us yet.

I mean, since when should a bunch of computer programmers, slimy CEOs, clever marketing whiz-kids, and Japanese electronics manufacturing firms, be looked to for the stewardship of our education system? What credentials did they ever have to get this authority? Why are a bunch of conscience-less corporations steering the type of learning media--and thus the learning curriculae-- which appears in US schoolrooms? Boggles the mind.

Melissa (missams) | 59 comments I believe that the kindle would support more text books. Though I have to tell you there is nothing better than paper. There are also studies that show that reading from an E-reader deminish your comprehension of the text.

yusuke | 5 comments I don't think an E-reader would distract me. I mean it is in E-ink, so it is mostly for text pages, not for videos or graphics. Plus carrying my textbooks is starting to give me back pain.

Bird (berthereadsbooks) | 14 comments I don't think it is very handy to read textbooks from an ereader. You'll have to zoom in and drag the file around all the time (which is VERY annoying on an ereader), and also, yes some ereaders have a web browser, but in my experience this is too slow to even consider buying one for that purpose. Ereaders are good to read novels and other such books on, but it would definitely be a failure for school purposes. Don't do it...
