I have read "The Magicians" by Grossman and it is not the series I was searching for.

I also think that The Iron Trial was released after the book I search.
I sincerely apologize for causing such trouble searching for a probably obscure book - however I remember that it had reviews, so it can't be totally unknown.

I think that the author of my forgotten series is a man, though.

I know of Charlie Bone and Tanya Grotter and they're both considerably older than the series I remember seeing circa 2010 - 2012.
Still, many thanks for the kind help.

I liked Artemis, but didn't become a fan, Broken Prism I tried, but found it to be dull

The story is about a young boy, which goes to magical school. I seem to remember that the author said that it is a beginning of a series, which is good for Harry Potter fans, however as the books progress, it will become darker and more violent. I think that more than 7 books were planned, quite possibly as many as 12.
I saw this book around 2011 or 2012, while I was new to the website. The series have barely started, the book could not have been much better.
I remember that a reviewer complained that it was a bit too similar to Harry Potter, with the characters cast as the protagonists of the series by J.K. Rowling.
I am interested in that subgenre and I am very interested to find it. I hope that I haven't broken any rules with this post. If that would help, the series is NOT "The Tapestry", "Erec Rex", "Leven Thumps", "Monster Academy" or "Royal Institute of Magic", with which I am familiar.
Possibly indy-published.
