The participation is so limited😩 I wish there was a way to pull in bigger numbers to make it more fun. It seems like as the year went on the interest in challenges died down.

the name game
find books whose titles start with the first five (or however many) letters of your name. for example, my name is jessica, so i would find books with a title that starts with J, one that starts with E, two that start with S, and one that starts with I.
the number of letters of course may be a bit difficult to tie down since some people have super short names but🤷🏻♀️
title chain
everyone starts with a book whose title starts with the letter A. the next book's title must start with the last letter of the previous books title. so if you started with "A Dog's Purpose," the next book has to start with the letter E, like "Eleanor & Park." and the next book must start with the letter K.
adaptations
we can have a list that people add to of middle grade books that have been adapted into movies, and then kind of do like we did for the randomly generated halloween / spooky season books and read our way through the list.

Now that you say it it makes so much sense why participation in challenges like the TBR challenge and the August MG challenge were higher than any of the other events I hosted. But that seems like a problem you can't fix. When you're busy, you're busy. Even for me I found it hard to organise the group the past few months because I was busy so I can imagine it's the same thing for people finding it hard to find the time to participate.

Also, for those who took part in it, what do you think of me doing something like the October Readathon again some time next year? So like a themed readathon with a pre-picked list of books that you read from. Is that something that people would be interested in taking part in next year?

and i really think it depends on the people and what they're doing. maybe you could do a poll or something or have sections of dates to find when people are the most free or something like that? i think we should do something big or have something for the start of the year, because that's probably when people will have first set their reading goals and such and will be pumped for them because resolutions😂 but i definitely think the first couple months might be a good time. summer months definitely because those in school will be off.
i think the best months to be avoided would be end of semesters / terms since people will be focused immensely on school and finals and such. for us that happens in May and December

i loved this so i'm in full support

Makes sense. So that leaves me looking at Jan, Feb, March, July, August and October. Seems pretty good to me! There'll be a Book of the Month every month too plus I'm planning the several-month-long readathon so I'm not sure how many months that will be.
I've actually been cross-checking these months I've listed with the months that did well in terms of participation in 2019 and I've just realised that January to June is unknown territory for me because I made this group in the middle of the year. That just hit me, wow! 7 month anniversary of the group!

Ilsen wrote: "I loved the October Readathon so yes I’m fully in support of that! I thought it was so much fun!"
🙌🏻🙌🏻This is definitely on the table then. I actually really enjoyed it too! It was a lot more fun than regular readathons because it kind of brought everyone together by reading each other's recommended books.

I feel I need to get better connected with middle age books that are new (kiddos in my life need recommendations!) but I lack time (as we all do).
Maybe you could showcase a new book release each month or quarter and encourage people to get ebook or library copy to read early?

Hopefully you can join in next time I run one! Introducing the book of the month and challenges earlier is a good idea and something I plan to start doing next year. It gives people more of a heads up and more time to find a copy of the book or check to see if they can participate. It's something I just need to forward plan and keep on top of.

ETA: I didn't do the October Readathon and was just reading back through this thread more carefully (just skimmed earlier), so.o i didn't realize this suggestion was really similar. Sorry about that!
Don’t apologise! Any idea can be of use. I really like the “Choose Your Own Adventure” idea! Maybe it could be tweaked a bit so that you choose path a or path b by reading a book that is similar to the path you chose. It could be like “to take path a read book 1, 2 or 3”... I actually really like that. It’s creative and interactive. I’m just wondering about the logistics of it in terms of time.
In order to keep it fresh it would be cooler to release each path choice as the last path is complete because releasing all the path choices at once would ruin the mystery of the ending of the Choose Your Own Adventure story. Ok so what I could do is send the specific person the next path choices they have once they’ve finished reading the book. What do you think of that?
What does everyone think of this idea? The more I think about it the more I really like it and it could be so fun to write out the story. What genre could it be? Adventure, mystery, romance?

I love this idea!!
((I really wish I could take part in it next year :/))

I’ve come up with the rules and it seems fairly executable. This is a chance to show off my writing chops👏🏻😂 I’m excited to do this actually! I’m wondering what month would suit everyone and what genre the story should be. I’ll set up a poll maybe tomorrow
A quick synopsis for the Choose Your Own Adventure Reading Challenge story:
Nothing new or unusual ever seems to happen in the town of Fallow. It’s the kind of town where everyone knows everyone and everything is always the same. Then new kid Colm Dougherty arrives, shattering this facade, and suddenly nothing is as it seems. What would you do if you found out that all the people that you knew weren’t real? What would you do if you learnt that the government were using hard-light holograms to masquerade as living people in order to control the smaller masses of real people? Would helping the Rebellion really put a stop to the nefarious government? Or would it only make everything worse?
This comes from an idea I’ve had for a few years but I never got down to creating a plot for it so this should be interesting. I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on it!

Yay! I’m glad you like it Ilsen!😊❤️ I’d probably be looking to host this challenge in July. It’s the time when I assume most people will be free and this is one challenge I would love for people to participate in.

I'm excited for this! I've put it down for July so I've got time to plan and write all the relevant parts and pick out books for each of the paths you can take in the story. Should be fun!

Hey Ilsen😊 So the UNO challenge is hosted by the Perks of Being a Book Addict group: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
The challenge starts in Feb and I’ve tried searching their discussions page for the sign up page but I can’t find it so I think the sign ups start in January.
You can check out how the challenge works here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Taking part is a commitment because it spans 3 months and your team relies on you to read books but it’s a ton of fun and you make a lot of friends. After the challenge was over I couldn’t stop myself from applying every book I read to the challenge criteria for months😂 I’ve taken part in it twice and I definitely recommend it!

No need to read the same book at the same time.
Here is the book challenge you can do with a buddy or with a group of people so you will also share the book that you are reading
to other people.
1. Plot of the story
2. Fave character
3. Hated villains or character
4. Fave scenes
5. Lesson of the story
6. What if ending plots
7. Relationship of the book to the title
Sounds like a cool idea Traci! Thanks for suggesting it! Might find a way to incorporate it into a future challenge😊
@Dee I’ve never watched the movie or read the book! Although I do remember before I came out I saw the trailer and the graphics looked awesome but the plot looked rubbish and then the reviews for the movie were really bad so I didn’t bother watching it.
But steampunk is a genre of MG books I rarely go into and I definitely need to change that so we should do some kind of challenge for it! Not a readathon it seems too basic and I already have random picker readathons planned for October and December... I’ll come up with something else.
Steampunk September has a real ring to it but it’s too late now to host it in September because I need more time to organise stuff for it.
In October I have the October Readathon planned (more info on that coming in September so keep an eye out for that)
And in November I had another goodquiz planned but I hadn’t decided on a book yet (I was going to make a poll) so I guess I can switch that out for this steampunk challenge event. What do you think of that?
Also if you have any particular ideas for what the challenge should be like I’m all ears! I love hearing other’s ideas!

This sounds good to me.
@Lynn great, glad you’re interested! I’ve got one planned for the October readathon and a similar one planned for December. I’ll be setting up a poll for people to suggest books for the October readathon soon and I’ll send out an invite and message for that so keep an eye out!
I want 2020 to be filled with new and interesting events that you all want to participate in so I'd love to hear your ideas and suggestions on the types of events you would like me to host on the group.
Feel free to drop any idea below!
