Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11457 comments I want in.

I choose 3, 47 and 7.

Now back to the rules and then gophering.

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I was going to go with 79 because it's the year I was born but that might make things necessarily difficult for me and limit my reading choice. So I've decided to go with 7.

Good decision! Stick to single digit numbers.

47 was surprisingly difficult for me.

Planning on:

328 The Sisters Brothers
247 Goatsong: A Novel of Ancient Athens not arrived!
247 The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
176 Delta Factor

for now!☻

message 6: by Tasha (last edited Nov 23, 2014 04:53AM) (new)

Tasha My pick is number 8. :)

ETA: I found Breakfast at Tiffany's at 178 pages (it just squeeks by the minimum!). I've been wanting to read this one for a long time. It's a classic too! ;)

message 7: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Nov 23, 2014 04:19AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I got a 5. I'm going to read The Bat as it is 425pp long.

IF I get time (whom am I kidding, we all know I'm rubbish with 24 hour topplers), I rolled a 3, and can read In the Darkness which is 314pp

message 8: by Pragya (last edited Nov 23, 2014 08:36AM) (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments I choose 14, 80 and 95. Now fingers crossed.

Update: I chose 14 because it would be easy, it being 2014. Catch Me When I Fall or The Paper Magician.

80 was a risk, I wanted to go for 180 pages and what a surprise, it perfectly fit in for me. The Great Gatsby which I was going to read next month for the group read and for personal reading. Yay!

With 95, I might have taken a much bigger risk. I don't possess any of the books that have 195 pages or were published in 1895/1995 and satisfy the page criteria (or they are too big to be handled in a 24 hour toppler if I am reading 3 books!). Phew! Still gophering. The choice till now is Practical Magic

For 295 pages (I must be mad!) - The Color Purple or Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I really wanted to combine this with the monthly challenge so I don't over commit myself for December. And it looks like I'll be able to - I'll be reading The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making which is 247 pages long.

message 10: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Dec 07, 2014 06:01PM) (new)

Kristie | 19146 comments I'm in for my first toppler! I'll be pretty lucky to finish one book in 24 hours, but I'll choose 3 numbers just incase. I'll make them easier numbers though. I'll go with 2, 0, & 9. I'll be back to add books once I decide what I'm adding.

✓ 2 - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (226 pgs)

✓ 0 - Coming Clean (published 2013)

9 - Elixir (259 pgs) or Yellow Crocus (229 pgs)

message 11: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I'm also going to choose three numbers just in case.

0, 1, 2.

message 12: by Rebecca (last edited Dec 06, 2014 05:53AM) (new)

Rebecca (bd200789) I'm in. I'm not sure what I'll work, so I'll pick five numbers just in case I'm off.

3-Taken by Storm 231 pages
5- Home in Time for Christmas 285 pages
9- Dangerous To Love297 pages
14- published February 2014 A Ranch to Keep
89- published December 1989, also 189 pages

ha ha ha ha ha Kristie. Sorry but I can't stop laughing at you choosing three numbers! :D

message 14: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments I chose 8 and as luck would have it I can use the same book for two challenges

The Man With a Load of Mischief page count 278

message 15: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments It's not likely I will finish more than one book, but I'm going to pick 3 numbers. They represent the date, which is my birthday, written in the French date format:

6.12.14

message 16: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments That's the UK date format too. :-)

message 17: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) | 504 comments I'm going to make this totally easy on myself and chose '1'.
Lots of options.

message 18: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Drives me nuts - those date formats. As a bookkeeper, I get receipts from my clients with 6-7-14 and I have to question whether that's Jun 7 or Jul 6, because around here, there's no standard. It's up to the vendor how they want to display date format.

message 19: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments I find it confusing online, because so many sites are American, but some have the option to change to UK date formatting, so I see a mixture. When I see, say, 3/20/14, I find myself thinking 'But there isn't a 20th month... they stop at 12!'

message 22: by Thing Two (last edited Nov 23, 2014 12:28PM) (new)

Thing Two (thingtwo) 8 - The Quiet American 180 pages
18 - Dept. of Speculation 182 pages
28 - Can't and Won't: Stories 289 pages

Since I'm working that day, there's no way I'll finish the third book, but it's fun to think I'll have time to finish all three.

Here in Japan they also have a calendar system that uses eras, or basically how long an emperor has been on the throne. Today is 26.11.24 (26th year of the Heisei era, 11th month, 24th day), to add another level of confusion. -_^

message 26: by Kazen (new)

Kazen I'm choosing 14 (great idea!) and 7. Now to see where they lead me!

message 27: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Yes, Kazen, that would definitely add another layer of confusion.

Thanks for the explanation for that. I've never been able to work it out, but I've only come across it once or twice while in Japan, so really haven't invested any time into looking it up. So really good to know.

message 29: by Lori Z (new)

Lori Z | 2086 comments I'm in for 1 book. My number will be 2.

message 30: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I'm picking 4 and 7, but I am not sure how I will use them yet. If I read the books I had already planned, I guess that I can work them in, but I will have to see. The numbers are only for #of pages and publishing date, or anything that we can apply?

message 31: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Cherie - only number of pages and year or month of publishing date. I wanted to keep it simple :)

message 32: by Kirila (new)

Kirila | 660 comments I choose the number 8. It has been a lucky number for me through the years. Hopefully, it will lead to a nice read in December.

message 33: by Poongothai (last edited Dec 06, 2014 03:35AM) (new)

How to Dance with a Duke 333 pages

Got it Jmom. I understand. If they don't work out, I will change what I picked for the toppler.

message 35: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 2974 comments I'm keeping it simple with one book.

The number will be 13.
(That way it will keep with the books I will be mainly reading in December which are published in 2013, so I can complete my Choice Awards Challenge from another group).

message 36: by Tejas Janet (last edited Nov 25, 2014 09:23PM) (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments In honor of my November marriage anniversary I'm going with these numbers associated with that date: 11-8-96. However, it's unlikely I'll complete more than one book.

And here are the books I have in mind:
8 - The Maine Event - 178 pages
11 - The Rock Hole: A Red River Mystery - published 2011
96 - Her Books Presents: Book Club Picks - 196 pages

message 37: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Happy 8th anniversary, TJ! You're still honeymooners.

message 38: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Thank you, Janice. Actually, it's 18 years now. A long way from honeymooners, but it's been a favorable journey together on the balance.

We got married on the 8th day of November in 1996. I dislike the US month-date-year format, but have to conform to it in my daily life because of its ubiquitous usage here. The US shares the unflattering distinction of being non-metric with the countries of Liberia and Myanmar. Ugh.

message 39: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Pretty bad when a bookkeeper can't add and subtract! Where's my calculator! LOL!

I prefer the US date format. It's the way we speak it. We say Nov 8, not 8 Nov.

message 40: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments That's a good point, about how we speak versus write dates. For writing, it seems more logical to put date-month-year. And really, being the only ones following this format internationally is an embarrassment. Ditto re: metric. There's some push, but still not really enough.

Number for me are problematic - they tend to unexpectedly shift around on me so that 134 becomes 143 etc. Means I have to triple check and check again. Very tedious.

message 41: by Theresa~OctoberLace (last edited Nov 25, 2014 09:46PM) (new)

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 1090 comments I think I'll choose:
8 - The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams pub 1980 250 pages
9 - Tobacco Road by Erskine Caldwell pub 1932 192 pages
24 - The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis pub 1942 224 pages

Yeah, yay! I was thinking this way too.
So, I'm picking number 1
(I'm not sure I can participate, but I will give it a try. Topplers are hard to resist!)

message 48: by Mariab (last edited Nov 28, 2014 06:12PM) (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I think, I will read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is 213 p. long and was published 1999 (last year beginning with 1), and also 6 words long (for the december challenge)

message 49: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I'm on the hunt again for a book with the number 8 as the one I picked up from the library, Breakfast at Tiffany's, is a different edition and much less than the minimum pages required. :(

message 50: by Lara (last edited Dec 03, 2014 03:32PM) (new)

Lara | 1426 comments I've picked three numbers, but am not sure I'll get that much done. I've decided to pick numbers from my husband's birthday:

21 About Last Night 216 pp
7 Tethered 187 pp
65 Roseanna published in 1965
