In a lawless fantasy kingdom, some private militia-adjacent groups have formed to try to protect those who are vulnerable and eliminate those who cause too much harm. (Character A) is the Captain of a small, tight-knit group that has that goal. (A) and his group take out a gang of violent criminals who have been causing a lot of trouble recently, only to discover that along with them was (B), a child that the gang had kidnapped for their own purposes. (B) has nowhere to go, so (A)’s group takes them in to raise them.

At first they seem to be a sweet, quiet child, but when Muse A's spouse takes their anger on them, Muse B's true personality comes to light, and they may not be as sweet and innocent as they seem. Guy A likes to think he is a total badass that everyone loves at school. He portrays himself as the coolest guy there. He’s rich, handsome, a jock, and someone that shouldn’t be messed with. However, back home, he’s a broken mess. With his parents getting a divorce, being neglected from a young age, and not having any real friends, Guy A isn’t actually too happy. Girl A is new in school and is told to stay away from Guy A by her new friend if she doesn’t want trouble. However, they don't know that Girl A moved into Guy A’s house since her mother will be his grandfather's nurse, and so she comes to learn a side of him no one knows. She tries to listen to her friends, but Guy A starts to find comfort in her presence at home, and so does she.

The party lights blurred together in the hazy glow of the backyard as Aiden slipped away from the crowd, his "perfect" facade still in place but wearing thin, the cool air a welcome relief. Here, away from the cheers and the constant chatter, he could take a breath—a real breath, not the shallow one he’d been holding to keep up the mask he wore every day. His classmates adored him, worshiped him even, and that used to be enough. But lately, every compliment, every laugh at his jokes, every friend who only knew him as the confident, untouchable Aiden felt like a weight pressing down on him. Like a suit of armor that was starting to suffocate.

He was about to pull out his phone, a pointless gesture to pretend he wasn’t just hiding, when he heard a familiar voice behind him.

“Aiden.”

He turned to see Elizabeth standing there, arms crossed and eyes narrowed in frustration. She wore the same look she’d had all week—concern edged with disappointment.

“What’s up?” he asked, feigning nonchalance as he leaned against the patio railing. “Did you come to congratulate me on being voted ‘Most Likely to Succeed’?” he added with a smirk, trying to lighten the tension that seemed to follow them now.

But Elizabeth's expression didn’t budge. “I’m not here to play along with your act,” she said, her voice low but firm. “You can pretend everything’s fine at school, but I know what things are really like, Aiden. And I’m tired of watching you live like this—like you’re two different people who don’t even know each other.”

Aiden forced himself to hold the smirk, to act like her words hadn’t hit him straight in the chest, but his grip on the railing tightened. The last thing he wanted was for Elizabeth to see how close she was to the truth, how her words scraped at something raw inside him. But she was looking at him in that way she always did—like she saw through every layer of armor he wore, every carefully placed lie he told the world. And he hated it because part of him needed her to believe it, to let him be the perfect, untouchable Aiden he’d worked so hard to become.

“You’re acting like this is some big tragedy,” he scoffed, turning away from her sharp gaze. “I’m fine, Liz. This is just who I am, alright? The people at school don’t need to see anything else. They don’t want to.”

“Don’t call me that,” she snapped, stepping closer, her face twisted with frustration and something else he couldn’t quite name. “And don’t pretend like I’m the one making a big deal out of this. You’re the one lying to everyone—to yourself. You think I can’t see how miserable you are?”

Aiden's jaw clenched, the mask slipping as the frustration bubbled over. “You don’t get it, Elizabeth. People need me to be this way. It’s not about what I want; it’s what they expect. If I just… let all that go, then what am I? Another messed-up kid from a broken family? What’s so great about that?”

“You’re not just some label, Aiden!” Her voice cracked, her words carrying more than just anger—they carried hurt. “But you’re so obsessed with looking perfect that you don’t even care who you hurt in the process. I’m right here, but you act like I don’t even exist when it doesn’t suit your stupid image.”

He opened his mouth, then closed it, feeling the sting of her words. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he knew she was right. But he also knew that letting her in meant admitting that he was more broken than he let on, and that terrified him.

“It’s not about you, Elizabeth,” he said finally, his voice quiet but strained. “You think I want to push you away? You’re the only one who… who actually knows me. But this isn’t some fairy tale where we get to just forget everything. I have to keep up this lie, or else… I don’t know what’s left.”

Elizabeth’s eyes softened for a moment, and he saw the glimmer of something there—maybe sympathy, maybe hurt, or maybe something he was too scared to even hope for. “Then stop lying,” she whispered, voice trembling. “Stop pretending I don’t mean anything to you. Because the Aiden I see at school, the one who ignores me, who acts like we’re strangers… he’s selfish. He’s a coward.”

Aiden felt his throat tighten, his heart pounding painfully. He knew he should say something to bridge the distance between them, but the words were trapped behind everything he couldn’t bring himself to admit. He wanted to tell her she was right, that she was the only thing that felt real in his life, the one person he could actually breathe around. But saying it out loud felt too dangerous, too final.

Instead, he just stared at her, his silence a pathetic shield against the truth she was laying bare.

Elizabeth let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head. “You know what? Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I thought you were stronger than this. But if this fake, perfect life means more to you than I do, then fine. Go ahead. Pretend I don’t exist. But don’t you dare act like this doesn’t hurt, like I don’t see what this is doing to you.”

With one last, searing look, she turned on her heel and walked away, leaving him alone with the emptiness of his own choices. He watched her go, the ache in his chest growing unbearable, but he stayed silent, the words he needed to say caught somewhere between fear and pride.

And as the distance between them grew, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d just let something irreplaceable slip through his fingers. (hide spoiler)]

He was one of the best soldiers the uprising had, and therefore was the first choice to use as a spy. As a result, he was placed in the system and made into a guard, quickly rising in the ranks to become the princess’s guard. Of course, it was all a plan. Be her guard, earn her trust, and kidnap her. That way they would have the perfect bargaining chip when it comes to taking over the kingdom. But things didn't go that way. No. In between earning her trust and kidnapping her, another step was added. One that wasn't supposed to happen. He started to fall for her. So what should he do? Follow his orders? Or protect her?

The market was alive with vibrant colors and the scent of freshly baked bread mingling with the earthy tones of herbs and spices. Laughter and chatter filled the air, drowning out the weight of secrets and hidden intentions. Alec guided the princess through the bustling crowd, casting quick glances around to make sure no one recognized her. She was dressed like a simple town girl, her golden hair tucked under a woolen hood, her face illuminated with pure wonder as she took in the sights. For her, this was a day of freedom. For him, it was supposed to be a mission.

At least, that’s what he kept telling himself.

Alec had never thought he’d find himself in such a predicament. The plan was clear, mapped out in detail: gain her trust, get close, and find the perfect moment to whisk her away as ransom to further his cause. But watching her now, her eyes bright as she marveled at the trinkets lining a merchant’s stall, he felt something twist inside him—something unfamiliar and unwelcome.

“Look at this, Alec!” Her voice was soft yet brimming with excitement as she held up a simple carved pendant. She looked at him with a smile that made his breath catch, her eyes wide with genuine happiness.

He forced a grin, swallowing down the ache in his chest. “It’s beautiful,” he managed, but his voice sounded hollow, even to himself.

It was just supposed to be another task, another assignment. She was supposed to be a means to an end. But each laugh, each shared glance, had started to chip away at his resolve. Alec had seen her strength, her kindness, her quiet resilience within the walls of the palace, and here—out in the open, stripped of her royal title—she was everything he hadn’t expected. And suddenly, his carefully laid plans felt like betrayal.

“You don’t come to the market much, do you?” she asked, still admiring the pendant.

He hesitated, then shook his head. “No, not like this.” He paused, carefully choosing his words. “I usually keep to myself.”

She laughed, the sound light as it escaped her. “Then we’re both experiencing something new.” She tucked the pendant back and moved on, and he followed, catching the subtle way she tilted her head to listen to a street musician playing a worn flute.

It would be easy, he reminded himself. With her distracted, he could slip away and send the signal to his contacts. They’d be waiting in the alley, just beyond the marketplace. All he had to do was lead her there. But his feet felt rooted to the cobblestone, and his hand unconsciously clenched into a fist. Each step he took now felt heavier, weighed down by an emotion he couldn’t quite name.

As they wandered deeper into the market, he became painfully aware of her arm brushing against his. It was the kind of accidental touch he’d never even noticed with anyone else, but with her, it felt like an anchor tethering him to this moment.

She turned to him again, her eyes softer now. “Thank you, Alec. For bringing me here. I know it wasn’t exactly…proper.”

He let out a strained chuckle. “Proper has never been my strong suit.”

She gave him that smile again—the one that felt as though it was meant just for him, as though she could see past the facade he wore and into something he’d kept hidden for so long. His heart ached, his mind wrestling with itself. He wanted to tell her the truth, to confess everything. He wanted to run far from this place and protect her from anyone who would dare harm her, including himself. The conflicting desires clawed at him, tearing apart the very identity he’d built.

But it wasn’t just his heart urging him to stay at her side. It was her trust, the faith she placed in him without hesitation. He knew the price of betrayal, had dealt with it his whole life. And the thought of being the one to shatter her trust—it was unbearable.

He clenched his jaw, his fingers itching to reach for her hand. “It’s…nothing,” he finally replied, his voice low, almost afraid that if he spoke too loudly, he’d betray everything he was holding back.

She tilted her head, sensing something was wrong. “Alec…are you alright?”

He opened his mouth to respond, but no words came. Every ounce of training, every mission, every goal he’d ever set—all of it warred against what he wanted now. To stay here with her, to protect her, to be the man she saw him as instead of the one he’d been raised to become.

“Yes,” he said, his voice a bare whisper. “I’m…fine.”

The soft way her hands poured his hot drink, the way her gaze lowered respectfully whenever he glanced her way. His eyes lingered on her longer than he intended, tracing the curve of her cheek, the line of her neck. It was a distraction—one that tugged at something deeper, something he’d tried to keep locked away under the guise of duty.

“Would you like your tea now, Your Highness?” she asked.

“Yes, please,” Adrien answered, watching her intently.

Elizabeth moved forward, extending the cup toward him with her usual steady hand, but Adrien, so focused on her, fumbled as he reached for it. The cup slipped from his grasp, spilling its contents over his hand and onto his shirt.

“Oh! I’m so sorry, Your Highness,” she gasped, her cheeks flushing as she set the cup down quickly. Without a second thought, she reached for his shirt, her fingers deftly working at the buttons to help him out of the damp, tea-stained fabric before it could burn him.

Adrien’s breath hitched as her hands brushed against his chest. The warmth of her fingers, the closeness of her, the scent of lavender and something sweet—it was all a heady mix he hadn’t prepared for. She kept her gaze down, focused on the task at hand, but he could feel her own tension growing with each button undone.

His breath hitched as he realized how close he’d come to her, the warm light casting shadows across her face, highlighting the delicate curve of her cheek, the softness of her mouth. A magnetic tension hung in the air between them, and for the first time, Adrien found himself unable to turn away.

“Elizabeth…” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.

She looked at him, uncertainty flickering in her eyes as his hand hesitated, hovering near her face. “Your Highness?” she whispered, as if afraid to disturb the fragile moment between them.

But he didn’t move back. Instead, his fingers found her cheek, his thumb brushing softly over her skin, and a warmth bloomed in his chest he hadn’t anticipated. “You’ve… been there for me, through everything,” he said, his voice tight with unspoken words. “And I need something tonight, something to take my mind off… all of this.”

Her eyes widened slightly, understanding dawning as the weight of his words settled over her. “Your Highness,” she began, her voice wavering as she tried to gather her thoughts. “I… I’m only your maid. It wouldn’t be proper—”

“Elizabeth,” he interrupted gently, his voice laced with a desperation he couldn’t hide. “For once, let’s set aside what’s ‘proper.’ Just… be with me. No strings attached. No expectations. Just… you and me, a brief escape.”

She hesitated, visibly torn. Her loyalty to him was unquestionable, and he knew she’d do anything to ease his burdens, yet he could see her grappling with the implications, with the boundaries they were dangerously close to crossing. She searched his face, her hesitation both a question and an answer, a silent challenge to his impulsive desire.

“Are you sure?” she asked finally, her voice no louder than a breath. “If we get caught… who knows what the repercussions will be.”

He swallowed, feeling his pulse quicken. “Yes,” he murmured, his gaze never leaving hers. “No one will find out. It’ll be our little secret.”

Her gaze softened, and after a long, agonizing moment, she nodded, a quiet acceptance that made his heart pound in a way he hadn’t anticipated. This was no longer just a way to escape—she was becoming his anchor, a piece of calm he found himself craving in his world of relentless demands.

One night became another, and then another, until their arrangement wove itself into his routine. He’d find her waiting for him, her presence a balm to his frayed nerves, a quiet constant amid the storm of his life. Yet, the simplicity of their arrangement began to fray, and he found himself lingering a little too long after, watching her as she slept, feeling a strange, unspoken attachment growing within him.

When word came of an impending marriage—an alliance meant to save the kingdom—he felt his chest tighten, a twist of dread that surprised him. The thought of severing this one bond, of losing the quiet solace he’d found in her, shook him more than he cared to admit. Torn between duty and desire, between loyalty to his kingdom and his own need for her, he realized that he’d never truly been prepared for the decision that lay ahead.
