I know I'm not allowed to post these on the topic, so I'm posting them here; I remember that this girl, the main character, finds out in the end that her mother is working with a group of people who basically develop super-human serum. It makes the people who take it smarter; faster; stronger; better-looking, too. However, there are two versions of it; the one that comes with no side effects and the one that comes of deadly side effects. The main character's friend are chosen for a test with the type of serum that has deadly side effects. They're chosen because they've just turned eighteen and can now make their own decisions and sign their own contracts, etc. The side effects make the person taking the serum lose the ability to feel emotion-- essentially, they become numb and unable to feel sympathy. Because of this, to avoid needless deaths and murders, the creators of the serum incorporated a sort of emergency alarm system thing inside the serum; as soon as the person that took the serum does something so terrible that they can't be viewed as human anymore, they are forced to kill themselves. That is what happened to the main character's friends. Ariel, a girl with long red hair, burns down an animal shelter for abused animals (with the animals trapped inside) simply because she felt like it-- or rather, felt "numb." Devon, another girl, landed her swimming teammate in the hospital-- because she felt "numb." Another girl, Zoe, killed a man. In the end, the main character also takes the serum (by accident) and her mother takes her down to the lab to try and fix her daughter. There the girl finds other people that her mother has tested on and kept imprisoned in the lab. The girl becomes furious and breaks them out before burning the lab to the ground. She's supposed to die-- she even had a vision of her two dead friends side-by-side-- but she wakes up and discovers that the people her mother had tested on had saved her life since she had also saved theirs.
