Janette | 2 comments This book was definitely by an English author and not translated. I read it in 2018 but I got it from the library so I would say it was written in the 90's maybe first decade of 2000s.
The woman was not happy in her marriage and used to go on long running sessions preparing for marathons. While running in the forest one day she was hit on the head, waking up later in a hut with a mysterious man close to her. He did not speak much but he took care of her quite well. Also on one occassion they visited his neighbours that he despised and for good reason. The girl was pregnant by her brothers and the mum didn't know. As the protagonist/woman was a vet/doctor, im not sure, they quickly went into town at night to steal some meds and help the young pregnant girl. Even though the protagonist felt safe there she of course wanted to go home not knowing what the man wanted from her. She started having feelings however and one night they ended up sleeping together. At this part,I dont remember exactly what happened but the detectives tracked her down and were very close to the area/forest. As she was on her way there to meet with them I remember that the identity of the man was partially revealed. He was an ex detective who was laying low as people thought he was responsible for a mass shooting some years ago. It is also revealed that it was the husband who was trying to kill her and the man in the hut was trying to take care of her. The book ends with the two getting together in some way I think.
