Sammi (readingwithsammi) | 66 comments Ok so here’s all I can remember
I read this during 2010 it was likely published around that time.

The cover is like a deep pink/red color with some sort of feathers on it - lady is on the side of the cover maybe in green she’s only half showing and it’s her back.

I tend to think the word golden or gilded is in the title but I’m not 100% sure

It starts out as two sisters in an orphanage I think their family recently died . One sister is older she gets sent out to work as a maid in a house. The man of the house sexually abuses her and gets her pregnant. He forces her to perform a coat hanger abortion on herself . Eventually the wife kickes her out.

Not sure what happens in the middle but something like the nun leaves the orphanage and finds a man and just leaves her old life behind idk.

Later on the girl starts working on films to make money (she kinda is sleeping with directors or exposing herself to get parts for money) eventually she starts dating a big deal European director and he makes her famous.

The war breaks out maybe idk if it’s ww1 or ww2
She’s in California he’s in Europe and their letters keep getting intercepted / edited so they can’t communicate

& I forget the rest

Any help would be great !
