I read this book for the ATY 2019 Reading Challenge Week 12: a book about reading and books
Booker was 9 years old and recently freed from slavery with his mother, father, and brother. He, his father, and brother worked in the salt works from morning until night to feed and clothe the family. However, Booker dreamed of learning to read. His family knew of this dream. What a delight it was when his mother, who couldn't read, bought him an alphabet book. Then, a man in his town taught him the sounds of the letters. This story is loosely based on the life of Booker T. Washington and his fight to learn to read. Such a wonderful story!
