SOLVED. Short story collection about religion and desire. [s]

Here's what I know:

I literally just finished this book, gave it away, and then forgot what it's called.

Short story collection, written by a woman who looks white and I think has short hair in her pic and is middle aged and thin.

Stories were about (according to the back cover) religion and desire. The stories were about all different kinds of people in all different time periods; some of the stories briefly mentioned characters from other stories but they weren't all interconnected.

The cover was blue and looked sort of like an abstract watercolor landscape of water and shore

I'm prettttty positive the title was one word and i thiiink it started with an A but I might be wrong

I only remember one story unfortunately, which was either the last or one of the last stories. It was about an american woman who marries an american man; he's the friend of her brother. and they decide to become missionaries in china. it took place in the past-- maybe 1800s or 1900s? they go to china and there is mounting xenophobia and violence towards foreigners. they send their eldest son back to the states for safety. their daughter dies of some disease-- typhoid? i think her name is lucy. in the end they are all murdered by a mob as they try to escape.

the book was published in the 90s or 00's or 10's.
