I have to keep reminding myself to focus on the books I have planned to read in December.

Go to the folder, "Challenges: Year Long Main. There are two starred threads at the top of the folder. One is the challenge with the tasks. The second one is the questions. Yes, you certainly may still answer the questions.

Kristie | 19217 comments Renee - Go to the TEST page first to take the test. The correct answer is behind the spoiler. For each question mark yay if you got it correct or nay if you did not. Keep track of all your yays and nays. You do not need to keep track of your actual answers.

Next go to the twisted trivia challenge page. Each question has a task for yay and one for nay. You do whichever task goes with your response from the test. All the details about the challenge and how to keep track, request badges, etc are also in this thread.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice - I just could not find the actual MM Challenge thread at first, that is all I meant. It was buried on page 6, but is probably on 8 or 9 now. ;o)

I have been tracking tasks for three past yearly challenges now and I am still not finished with any of them. I decided that I am not going to do it for MM challenge though (I think). I am going to compare the books I had planned and never read and see if they fit any of the Trivia tasks (I already know that some do.) It is not really the tasks, but the book titles that I hate to loose track of. I may keep my spread sheet but I am pretty well done posting. For the second time this year, I have no books showing as "currently reading". I will pick up my monthly challenge book tonight and I am still waiting for the group read book. I have last month's group read book on hand to start. I was re-listening to an audio book last night because I did not want to let it go yet. I hate being between challenges and I do not feel like gophering yet. I told my co-worker that I need to find a hermit shack and go hide out for about a month.

I know what you mean about losing books. I decided to wrap up the MM challenge in November since I knew i wouldn't finish badge 4. So I tidied up my personal thread and now some of the books that I didn't get to and deleted will fit for the 2020 yearly challenge. Will not do that again!

Vicki | 1538 comments It's been ages since I read an Omnibus. If I read The Fionavar Tapestry Could I count it for three tasks, such as
The Summer Tree - High fanatasy
The Wandering Fire - 2nd in a series
The Darkest Road - Mountains on the cover (from the omnibus edition.)

Suzanne | 1257 comments Awesome challenge, Janice! I think I enjoy gophering as much as I do reading the books! Question: For the task that requires a book that starts with Q or Z, do we have to include articles? I have a book that starts with "The Queen" - hoping I can use it:)

You may count it as 3 separate books as long as the individual component meets the minimum page limit. Cover tasks need to be based on the actual edition you read. In this case, there are mountains on the cover of the omnibus.

You may ignore the articles. "Queen" would be the same as "The Queen".

No - two different tasks. Some of the tasks are so similar that I had to try and get creative.

Suzanne | 1257 comments Another question: For a book with "dance" in the title, could dance be the root? For instance, would a title with "dancing" or "dancer" count?

Unless it's specified as the root, it would be the exact word. Plurals are allowed.

I'm really tired right now. Been quilting all day, and I'm not sure I follow you.

I have "April as title or setting" for two different cards - Card 1 and Card 21. Is that what you mean when you say double task?

If so, you will need to read a different book for each time the task is listed. That means, I have to find two books with "April" in the title or set during the month of April.

I tried really hard to avoid duplications, but I've discovered a few times that I missed them.

The Leftover Stew challenge is a personal challenge so there are no links. I hate not finishing a challenge but sometimes it's not realistic. Whatever I don't finish during the allotted time for the annual challenge, I try to finish the next year. I roll the tasks I didn't complete onto a separate spreadsheet and attempt to complete them without a formal challenge. My 2020 Leftover Stew Challenge are the books I didn't finish for the 2019 Movie Mania Challenge.

Here, when you cook a big meal and there is food not eaten, it goes into the fridge to eat another day. We call them leftovers. I'm not sure if you have the same terminology in India. My mother used to make a stew and add those leftovers into the pot. That's where I got the idea.

You can do your own Leftover Stew challenge if you like. You just cross the books off your list. There is no place to report them, nor do you get badges for them. It's just kind of fun to be able to complete a goal.

I've adopted Janice's Leftover Stew Challenge. I just keep a list in my personal thread.

I once asked my step-mother "What's for dinner?" Her response was "Mustgos". What are "Mustgos?" I queried. She said:

Everything in the refrigerator MUST GO!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11281 comments Every year I manage to place many left overs in the new challenge, but I was thinking the other day that I should really focus in reading some of them I have been dragging since passport challenge (I can't remember right now its actual name, but it was Passport Challenge to me)

message 77: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same here Sandra!

Also interesting that I have some books as a possibility for several books, while they fitted nowhere last year. Or the other way around.

message 78: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Mostly, I just keep my old spread sheets on my laptop and update them if I find a book that fits an old category, or if I read one of the planned books that never made it onto a new challenge. I have already found homes for some of my unread books on my new challenge sheet. I am not going to carry over the MM challenge to completion. I never planned to re-read some of the movie books, so it was never going to be completed anyway. I want to read some of my door stops this year, so I am not looking to go beyond badge two or three. I have a couple of owned books that I have been dragging along since the Geo challenge. My series list is on-going, but I am only going to track the most active ones this year. My 2019 series list will become my new spreadsheet so that I can move some of my series tracking off of my owned book list.

Jayme | 4544 comments I've changed up my plans for 2020 too. I realized that the last couple of years I have really been focusing on newly published books, so this year I'm trying to read more classics and knocking out previous award winners. I'm going to try to read a Pulitzer Prize winner each month and hopefully it can work for the challenge, if not, that's OK too. What I'm finding is that some Pulitzer winners that fit for the challenge are not available at my library. When I asked our librarian she said people aren't interested in them. I thought that was rather sad.

So depressing! I used to have an amazing local library in PA. Not so impressed by the local branches here.

message 81: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments That is sad, Jayme. I gophered a few authors that I was interested in reading but I have not checked on their book availablility yet. Hopefully I will have time to look tomorrow.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Punishment! I thought I was going crazy when I was gophering this morning. I was searching for books with "April in the title or set in the month of". I moved off of the task to add a book title to the "lips" task, and when I queried April in my spread sheet, it took me to a different task. I finally realized that the same "requirement" is on two different cards. (Card 1 Nay for Sports and Card 21 Nay for History). Then, I was searching for American Civil War books and I find that it is on two different cards also. (Card 2 Yay for Entertainment and Card 19 Nay for History.) Not that I cannot find plenty of book titles to read and I am sure you will not allow me to use the same book for both cards, so can I change one of my answers for each to get a different criteria, or am I totally stuck for the criteria based on my answers?

You must have the same tasks as I do Cherie. I have two April tasks and two Civil War tasks. I discovered the duplicate Civil War tasks this morning when I was looking at my Audible wishlist. There was a great one - Daughter of a Daughter of a Queen about a woman who fought as a Buffalo soldier in the Civil War. I thought, "How did I miss that?" When I popped back to the main book page, I saw that I had already shelved it as Twisted Trivia Possibilities, yet I didn't have it marked for Card 19 task. When I searched the spreadsheet, there it was under the Card 2 task. ACK!!

I don't know what happened. I went over and over the tasks looking for duplicates. I have three tasks involving the word "King".

Long answer to your question. If you have 2 identical tasks, you have to read 2 different books.

message 85: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60005 comments In my self-defense... I wrote 360 tasks.

message 86: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We don't blame you Janice! Can't imagine having to keep track of 360 tasks!

I have civil war twice too. And set in Scotland / written by Scottish author. And I have a few that are partly similar, something with Irish author and set in Italy. I don't mind though, I have multiple options for all those tasks :)

message 87: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60005 comments LOL! We'll be well versed in some subjects. Come to think of it, I think I'll be in Italy a couple of times too.

message 88: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments When I saw the task I thought: I don't have any books set in Italy!! But then I gophered and actually found 4 or 5. So great way to get reaquainted with some of the books on my tbr too ;-)

message 89: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60005 comments It turns out I only have 1 Italy task. And I don't need to chose it specifically. The task is Italy, India, or Indonesia.

I agree. 360 is fairly insane really. I don't know how you do this, Janice, but I appreciate it a ton. Makes for a very enjoyable year (and a month of very obsessive and enjoyable gophering while we wait!!!)

message 92: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19217 comments I have had no time lately for anything! I don't even know what tasks I have yet. LOL! My plan is to complete the first 3 badges. I doubt I'll be able to do 4, so I'm gophering to fill up those 3 badges.

message 94: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19217 comments I plan to get the first two badges and I'll try for the third, but that one will probably be a little out of my reach.

message 95: by Cherie (last edited Dec 10, 2019 06:15PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments LOL! I am not blaming you, Janice, I was just trying to find a solution to our pain, if you have the same ones. I totally appreciate how difficult it must have been to write and keep track of all 360 tasks.

Your word is law, so I will do as you say. Maybe we can trade book titles. I found plenty! (Wow, if you let me switch the first American Civil War tasks, I was even willing to read Anna Karina or Slaughterhouse-Five).

My plan at this moment, is to do as you are planning. I know that I can read that many books, but then, it comes down to which 5 cards I want to finish before I decide on the task I have to read for badges 1 and 2.

I don't know why I have to have a title poked into every task, but for some reason - I am driven to have something for each one on my spread sheet. I only finished up to Card 8, so far and I am amazed at the titles I have been carrying around for so long.

The wine task almost had me wanting to go buy a bottle on my way home before I found a couple of titles I am willing to read. (I think Almeta had one I am going to add to my list.)

That's what I'm trying to do. I'm glad someone else has the same idea.

Cherie wrote: "...for some reason - I am driven to have something for each one on my spread sheet...."

At least one for each task. Sometimes two or three :)

message 97: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19217 comments I used to plug in a title for each task, but then I found that I would end up reading something different that fit the task anyway. Now, I try not to fill in the tasks that I think I will end up reading for without gophering and only look for books for those tasks that are unlikely to happen by on their own.

message 98: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I don’t mind replacing a book with another that had planned, except for the books I already own, Kristie.
I replaced too many of them last year and now, they don’t fit anything. That is why I have to decide which cards I might want to finish for badge 3.
I have finally learned not to add all of the titles to my TBR list too. I used to do that for the titles I had gophered. I will choose a title that is already on my TBR list first and then check to see if I own it. I have actually started eliminating books from my TBR list while I am gophering. Some of them really make me wonder what I was thinking! 😮

message 99: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19217 comments I can understand that, Cherie. I find books on my TBR occasionally that I don’t know why I put them on there. Sometimes I think they were recommendations from people, but I think most of them came from old challenges. I really should go through and clean off my TBR, but that would be so time consuming.

LOL! You and me both. I took the week off because I need a break from everything. I need to do some shopping, instead I sit here gophering.

That wine task was harder than I realized. I had visions of covers with wine glasses on them race through my head when I wrote the task so I didn't think it was an issue. Until I started gophering. Sheesh!
