Over the years, the Wiccan have attracted nicknames for themselves - witches, sorcerers, warlocks, demons. These were derived from urban legends created by mankind, to explain what little bursts of magic they had stumbled upon. Really, the Wiccan are just like the humans, apart from the fact that they are tuned to the Earth. The Earth is where their powers originate from - 'magic' is the ability for a Wiccan to direct and control the flow of energy from the environment around them and channel it. Most Wiccan can only fluently control one element or aspect of nature - their affinity. The one exception are the five families, the Imperium council. They are the most powerful Wiccan to walk the Earth, and with enough experience, can practice all four elements. Normally they only specialize in one, and over the years each family has adapted an element to represent their household. The Carmichael family has supposedly been wiped out, but their are slight rumors that they might not be completely gone - much to the Praetor's dislike.
At the age of 16, each Wiccan chooses which side they would like to join; light, or dark. There is no evil or good, just magic that provides to the well being of people, and magic that doesn't. The taboo between white and dark magic is unrivaled - once you choose your side, you cannot interact with the other. Though it isn't forbidden, it is extremely frowned upon and can get one disowned or worse.
There are three levels of the Imperium - the first, and lowest on the hierarchy, is the Magisters. They advise the council and take most of the minor duties, like preventing fights and enforcing laws on the people. The second tier is the Council - or, the 5. The five families make this up, and pretty much rule the entire Wiccan world. The last, and most powerful, are the Praetor and Regiment, a.k.a., the King and Queen. The Carmichaels are the true heirs to the throne, but as they are out of the picture (for now), the Valence family has stepped in.
The only step below the actual Wiccan population are the hybrids - half Wiccan, half human. They are dangerous and unpredictable because their Wiccan side allows them to feel the Earth's power course through them, but their human side blocks them from channeling that power. It eventually drives them insane, making them dangerous to both worlds. Hybrids are rare, but when they do appear, it is threatening to everyone. Killing them would be the best option, and sometimes the families overlook murders of their kind.
