Chapter 8

(view spoiler)[I've always related to Hermione. I feel like we have a lot in common. For instance, in this chapter she's trying to persuade other students, using her logic, that Trelwaney's predictions make no sense. I can clearly see myself do the same thing in that situation.
Any Avatar, the Air Bender fans here? This particular passage also reminds me of an episode in which they arrive in a village in which all the decisions are made based on the prediction of a clairvoyant of sort, and Sokka is doing everything he can to show it's just a scam! (hide spoiler)]

Remus Lupin has always been one of my favorite characters, though I am not quite sure why. It might be because (view spoiler)[ the students actually learn something in his class. He doesn't look down on the kids, but give them the respect they earn. He is also putting up with Snape's bad attitude while struggling against his werewolf side. (hide spoiler)]

Divination. Now that is quite a class. A lot of humbug going on there I would guess. But the thing I thought of when reading this time around was that (view spoiler)[ even though they all thinks it is bogus when the teacher continuously reads the Grim in Harry's future, she might actually be seeing a big dog in the leafs/crystal ball, just interpreting it wrong. I mean, Sirius Black is constantly hanging around Harry as a big black dog and will become a part of his future=P (hide spoiler)]

I agree with your reading of Lupin. He's also one of my favorite characters (and I have so many in this series, siriusly !) About divinations, (view spoiler)[ I never considered it that way ! maybe you're right and she really has a gift (well except for the prophecy aspect, which is obvious) but just doesn't know how to interpret them correctly. Also, she loves to be dramatic. So the problem maybe is that she feels the correct interpretation is too boring to be true ! lol
And for instance, she predicted something would happen the day one of the students (is it lavender? I'm not sure anymore) receives the news that her rabbit died. Maybe she indeed saw something, but again her dramatic side took over and the wording she used actually discredit her predictions...

As I've been reading these books, I feel like I had a different representation of her than what is displayed in the books (especially this one). I feel like in this book, she's mainly just fighting with Ron about the stupid cat (even though the cat is right :P) and overwhelmed with her studies. ALTHOUGH, I totally identify with wanting to take all the classes because I love learning so much. I'm just finding my view of her to be different from the books for some reason. (hide spoiler)]

I had no recollection of Snape (view spoiler)[losing it completely. You can practically see his eyes bulging and hear him yelling in rage when Black escapes. His hatred for the other men is clearly written. (hide spoiler)]

I am also curious as to why Harry doesn't ask Dumbledore (view spoiler)[ what Trelawney's other true prophecy was, when he revealed that she had had one before. It is a clear hint to the fifth book, but if it were me I would have wanted to know, given the severity of the one she gave Harry. (hide spoiler)]

I loved the bus too! It was a very fascinating concept for me as a kid, and I still want to take a ride in it.

Hogsmeade makes me jealous still, too. It sounds like such a wonderful, interesting little, cozy town. The film moments when they're there in the winter doesn't really help. It just looks so cozy!

It's interesting with Sirius Black (view spoiler)[and reading him as the villain, when you know he isn't, and catching all the clues that made people think he was the one that did it, when those moments just are proof of his loyalty/friendship/grief, etcetera. (hide spoiler)]

Crookshanks (view spoiler)[is an interesting character too. Now when I read about the cat always going after Scabbers, it makes me wonder if Crookshanks knows it's Pettigrew. I think I read a theory that says that Crookshanks was the Potter's cat, and the comment in the store that he's been there forever could support that, plus the fact that Crookshanks only ever goes after Pettigrew. If Crookshanks were the Potter's cat, surely he must have known about Pettigrew and recognise his scent and/or know that he could transform into a rat. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[Sirius asking Harry to come live with him is the most heart-warming and heart-wrenching moment of the whole book for me. Both of them have been so lonely and only desire to have a family again, and they found that in each-other. For Harry it's a chance to have a true father figure, and for Sirius to recover a part of his best friend as well as to amend himself for his past errors. They are both so insecure that they are genuinly surprised at the proposal/acceptance. Knowing that (view spoiler)[it will never happen just breaks my heart. (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)]

Sirius answered questions to deliberately make Harry think that he murdered his parents. I understand that's what needed to happen for the story to reveal the truth, but Sirius was being deceitful from the beginning of the conversation, which was frustrating. I'm really feeling bad for Hagrid. And I want a Hippogriff! I think Professor Trelwaney is a fraud, but I'm really liking Professor Lupin.

I love Sirius and how Harry finds out the truth about him, and tries to help him. I like how Hermione and Ron are so eager, and try to help them. I love how after Sirius gets captured again, Harry, Ron, and Hermione go and help him escape. I like how Hagrid introduces them to Buckbeak. I really liked this book. I definitely liked the movie better.

Just getting started with book three today and finished chapters 1 - 5.

Marge - (view spoiler)[I had forgotten how much worse Marge is than the Dursleys. Poor Harry. A week with someone that odious scrutinizing your every move is miserable. I always felt he should have gotten his form signed. He lasted the whole week, and as far as I'm concerned that last dinner was Vernon's fault for giving his sister too much alcohol. (hide spoiler)]

The Knight bus - I can safely say I would never want to ride it.

This book has a more depressing feel to it - I guess because of the Dementors? Almost everyone is grouchy and Harry is not having a fun year so far.

Just finished the books, so my thoughts on it :

(view spoiler)[This is my favorite Harry Potter book to date, I love how he discovers more details about his parents and their friend, particularly Sirius!! I feel that this book is the beginning of the darker books of Harry Potter with the Demantors and how difficult this year is for Harry.

I would have HATE the divination classes also, I am more like Hermione, I need facts and things to learn! I was not good at inventing stuff up :P

For Lupin, I really like him and cannot remember what happen with him in the next books. Do we even hear from him again? But nevermind, I really like him and the way he treats the students with respect.

Finally, I love how it ends with two innocents being saved. It is a great lesson that Dumbledore teach Harry and Hermione, you cannot change the past without big consequences. Harry would have been thrilled to catch Pettigrew, but sometimes destiny has its ways !! (hide spoiler)]

Stan's accent always kills me, and he's such an idiot... the way he keeps calling Harry Neville, even though he knows who Harry really is... I truly believe he's under the Imperius Curse later on, he's way too brainless to be evil.

Fudge is also completely useless, he needs to learn how to think without talking. Nice, too, how he basically admits that their underage magic laws are not all that solid... (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[One of my favorite chapters in the whole series! I love how Harry dives deep into living in the wizarding world (outside of Hogwarts) here and I want to see so much more of that! These are the books I want JK to write, the ones that give us more insight into the "real" wizarding world and what life is like for adult wizards.

Gotta love Crookshanks too, he knows right from the start what's up with Scabbers!

I agree with Marge; (view spoiler)[she is far worse than the Dursley's. I've never quite got why she has such vile feelings towards him. Dursley's is understandable, in a way, when you take into consideration other things one'll learn in the upcoming books. (hide spoiler)]

I also loved Harry's holiday in Diagon Alley. It's always so much fun learning about ordinary wizardry life.

I also like that this book starts to establish the plot for real, and is the stepping stone towards more darker, more mature storylines and writing.

Professor Lupin is my favourite professor beside McGonagall. I just love her and how fierce she is. She provides so much snark, so much feels and emotions, and under her stern ways, you can really see how much she loves her students and her job. (view spoiler)[Loved when McGonagall sobbed even more than Wood when they won the Cup. (hide spoiler)]

Sirius Black's (view spoiler)[ending in this story and the whole chapters when he got involved for real is just so heartbreaking. It's so hard to fantom the toil of being imprisoned in such a harsh, unforgiving prison for the murder of your best friend and his wife and having been wrongly accused and imprisoned for 12 years. And then thinking for a moment he'll be free, living a normal life with Harry, and both of them being robbed of that because of Pettigrew. (hide spoiler)]

Lupins' life too is so sad to hear about. (view spoiler)[Not only did he lose all of his best friends in one evening, but he has had to struggle for his living ever since because of prejudices, and losing his first proper job because parents won't want him to teach their kids. Lupin resigning is understandable since he feels bad about having forgotten to take the potion to make him sad, but he really was a brilliant teacher. He encouraged his students, met them at their level, proved that having fun is a great teaching tool. I loved his exam with the obstacle course. (hide spoiler)]

the fact that you apparently have to clip the twigs on your broomstick is kind of weird to me. do they grow or do you just keep clipping them til your broom is ridiculously small and then you have to get a new one?

i really kind of hate how every time the dursleys are mentioned she makes sure to remind how fat they are because it's like she's reinforcing fat = mean / lazy / whatever. i'm not saying that was her intention at all but it definitely comes across that way when every sentence is like 'dudley was horrible and mean to harry and also he had five chins and his ass drooped over the sides of his seat'

i love how sarcastic harry is with the dursley's and how his first thought is to try to blackmail them into signing his permission slip lol

as with previous [and future] books (view spoiler)[i wish people would just TELL HARRY WHAT IS GOING ON. seriously mr. weasley gets so many points from me for standing up for harry's right to know what is going on in his own damn life while everyone else is lying to him constantly. i know they think it's 'for his own good' but honestly that NEVER works out well (hide spoiler)]

SPOILERS FOR FUTURE BOOKS: it still completely baffles me that (view spoiler)[people are so quick to jump on the 'snape is totally awesome' bandwagon at the end of the series. i guess it's not really the time to talk about it yet but he has been horribly abusive to all these children for YEARS for literally no good reason [not to mention the fact that he was perfectly happy to let james and harry get murdered if voldemort would 'give' lily to him afterwards] and he does like ONE nice thing and suddenly everyone acts like he was a saint. i love when professor mcgonagall just totally drags professor trelawney at the christmas feast lol. even though i feel like someone once actually made a list of all trelawney's predictions and they all actually turned out to be true, although sometimes in weird ways.

re: hermione's homework problem (view spoiler)[why does she not just also use the time-turner to do homework? or is she not allowed? or is there a limit on how much you can use it in one day? i would think if she could use it to go to extra classes she should also be able to use to do extra homework... or maybe have one version of her sleeping while another is doing homework lol. the whole time turner plot is honestly kind of a mess but it's by far not the worst time travel plot i've seen. also i'm kind of surprised there are not more pet related incidents at hogwarts. i mean you've got owls, cats, and frogs, and apparently ron is allowed to have a rat for some reason. but owls and cats are both going to eat frogs [and rats] and honestly i wouldn't be surprised if the owls and cats got in fights with each other as well.

re: the quidditch match: i know we've already established that JKR did not think her math through but she says that 3/4th of the crowd was supporting gryffindor and then 200 people were on the slytherin end and i'm like HOW!!! HOW! 10 people per year in each house = 70 per house altogether and there aren't enough teachers to more than double the amount of people showing up to a quidditch game! sorry, i know it doesn't matter but i think it brings out my inner hermione and makes my eye twitch.
