I wasn't really sure where to put this, so I'll just stick it here. It is a website/blog sort of thing. This is classified as news I suppose. Goodreads has been nominated for a Webby. The Webby's have been called "The Internet's highest honor." Goodreads is competing in the Social Networking category against top sites Twitter, Digg, Bakespace and Cute as Hell. Right now, Goodreads holds second place, but barely.
Head on over to the Webby site and cast your vote for Goodreads! Voting ends on April 29, so hurry!

Thanks Renee. I have voted. It was easy. I was hoping that Kiva.org would be available for voting for non-profit or political or ??? It is a great organization that provides microfinance to many individuals in many countries who are trying to develop a business or expand. It allows individuals in wealthy countries to loan. I really like it. (I know its not book related but to me it is interesting, probably a book there for someone to write!) ;)
Hmm. Maybe it will be next time. Is it relatively new? Sometimes they just miss out simply because they haven't been around long. I think it's based on hits too. If the site doesn't have so many, it may not even get considered. Shame. It should be about the 'site', but i don't know.

My novels are mainly set in unique areas of Canada (check out THE RIVER set in an area known as the Bermuda Triangle of Canada!) and they've been used for novel studies in book clubs and schools across Canada, the US and even a NATO school in Germany.
My website features contests, freebies, excerpts and more.
My blog 'The suspense is killing me!' features reviews of other authors' books, contests, news and more. http://www.cherylktardif.blogspot.com

As some of you may be aware, I contribute a flash fiction challenge every month in Open Book Toronto. Due to some confusion over the Easter holidays, people away, etc. April's challenge deadline has been extended to the 15th for those of you who want to answer the question "What if?" for me. Full details are here: http://www.openbooktoronto.com/news/a...
The winner will have their story published in Open Book.

Very exciting!

Hi all, my name's Jason Blacker and I'm a Canadian author of both literary fiction and mystery fiction (in the hardboiled genre).
I was born in South Africa, but that seems like a lifetime ago. Actually, I've now lived in Canada longer than I ever was in South Africa. A milestone, and a happy Canadian because of it.
I have a website at jasonblacker.com if you'd like to find out a little more about me. I also write a daily haiku blog too.
Also, some great news, Jade a book blogger over at Sort of Beautiful is giving away a copy of my first mystery novel First Feature. You can enter as a Canadian, 'cos I'm the one that will be sending it out, but you have until midnight 16 June (I think that's PST).
I look forward to meeting all of you. I'm in Calgary, Alberta by the way.

Welcome Jason. I look forward to checking out your books. I missed the giveaway deadline but will still check out your website and Jade's blog too.

I haven't been getting updates. Sorry I missed you guys. Welcome and I'm off to check out your blogs/websites.

There will also be a giveaway of a signed first edition of Conceit. To enter, all you have to do is to post a message in the thread telling everybody (1) the title of your favourite historical novel, (2) the name of the author, (3) what you like about the book in 2-3 sentences. Any kind of historical novel is ok, even books that are not traditional historicals.
Cheers,
Mary

Some great books here, guys. Robin, I've picked up your book, just trying to find time to sit down and start reading. It's definitely captured my interest. Yours too, Mary. I should stop buying and start reading I think. I've got a big enough pile to last through the winter.
And, I forgot to add my new links here. I've just completed a nonfiction book on the craft of writing which I co-wrote with Carlos J. Cortes. It will be available around the end of September. Our facebook page is here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Writers... if you like the page, you're entered to win a free copy.

-- and click on Criticism. There's lots to read there. Most reviews are in pdf format, and some are links to publications.
But I sometimes review canadian books. Just out this month: a review in Literary Review of Canada on the retail life of Caitlin Kelly; in the new issue of Rain Taxi there's a review of Jessica Westhead's And Also Sharks; and a review of Chris Benjamin's Drive-by Saviours appears in American Book Review, the July-August issue.
That's some heavy reading, Jeff. I checked out a few of your reviews and I was surprised to find I liked your "voice". Let me explain...
Sometimes I read reviews in various publications and the language and "feel" of the review makes my brain hurt. It's as though the reviewer wants to make sure the reader knows he knows many words and rather than tell me about the book in plain English, he's showing off his vocabulary. Make sense? No? Don't worry. Your reviews aren't like that.
Anyway, I've added to my 'to-read' list. I hope this isn't really weird, but most of those books I've never heard of. Now I have a new source. Thanks.

It's not surprising that most of the books are unfamiliar. Taking the less-travelled path is preferable, to me; I'd rather review something or somebody new, or obscure, than review the latest by an author who is guaranteed widespread coverage. (My own book falls into the first category, so I feel sympathy for those like me.)
I appreciate what you say about the plain english aspect, which I try to maintain. If you look at the Criticism part of the site again, at the top is an essay on why I review as I do. Maybe that'll be of interest.
And it's great to hear that some book new to you has now been added to your reading list. The books are the main thing, and finding a new author is a wonderful experience.
All the best.
Jeff
I didn't notice that. I'll check it out later today. I figured you read less "known" work intentionally. I like that.
And I love finding "new to me" authors. Actually, I had no idea who Dennis LeHane was (I know! Weird) until I watched Shutter Island. I love his writing.

I am looking to touch base and brainstorm with other writers on promoting their work and getting reviews that get results.
I guess I'm a knob, too, because it didn't occur to me to post my blogs here, either.
http://www.chazzwrites.com is my blog for indie authors about improving writing and making publishing ebooks stronger, faster, better...bionic like The Six Million Dollar Man, but much less expensive.
http://www.allthatchazz.com features my weekly comedy/narrative podcasts and book news, videos, and love of writing and reading. Stop by if you like. I'm friendly, but not so much so that you get creeped out.

My current bestseller CHILDREN OF THE FOG is on Amazon's Top 100 Paid bestsellers list, something I'm very proud of, considering I'm a Canadian author. :-) That's the Top 100 out of every ebook on Amazon, over 1.1 million titles. I'm still pinching myself because it's hard for me to comprehend I'm outselling works by all my author idols.
If you're looking for a suspenseful read, I invite you to check it out: CHILDREN OF THE FOG
