She was trying to shoo away the seagulls from the package of fish and chips that the dead man was clutching. Or was it fish and chips? I looked closer at the package and saw....
that it was fish, but not chips. Three golden discs of potato scallop tumbled from the broken packaging as a particularly aggressive seagull tugged at it.
Suddenly the potato scallop exploded into a cloud of golden smoke."get back" I yelled " gat away from the cloud - it's a chemical - look at the gulls."
The gulls were all lying in the sand - not dead - sleeping.
The police and ambulance people came running down the beach as the crowd backed away from the dispersing gas and the sleeping gulls.
Stepping back, I was fortunate to not be affected by the gas and was content to silently watch on as the police commenced their investigations.
