ABANDONED. YA ugly creatures who can shapeshift into people they have killed

I read the book around 2011-2012. It's a YA coming of age story with hints of romance. The story starts off with a boy and his mom and the mom explaining that they are a different race other than human (i'm pretty sure the name of the race is the name of the book as well) and that in order to survive they need to study a humans day to day life, kill them, and then shapeshift into them (which lasts a very temporary among of time). The plot begins with the main character being disgusted with how foul of a creature he is and you get his whole inner monologue about how he never wants to be like his mom (who goes around transforming into people all the time just for fun) and how he wants to live the rest of his days peacefully just being himself. Something goes down and he ends up killing the local towns #1 high school jock or whatever and then has to assume his identity and ends up falling for a girl almost immediately. The rest of the book is pretty much just him coming to terms with who and what he is and what it means to be human and stuff.
