Karin You can find most older classics printed in at least one edition with only words on the title. eg

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Little Women (Little Women, #1, part 1) by Louisa May Alcott Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

and not just in public domain ones like the ones above, but they tend to show up first.

Tanu (tanu_reads) | 115 comments The Year of Magical Thinking fits this too. Sorry, not sure how to add the cover.

Jamie | 117 comments My TBR list has a few.

Rumors of Marty Goode by Jeff Ryan Williams Good Things Happen to People You Hate Essays by Rebecca Fishbein

This one technically has some graphics on the far left side, but they're also words, so ...?
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

message 54: by Theodora (new)

Theodora I was thinking about either reading 'The Princess saves herself in this one' The Princess Saves Herself in This One (Women Are Some Kind of Magic, #1) by Amanda Lovelace
or 'Warcross' Warcross (Warcross, #1) by Marie Lu I think 'Warcross' counts, does it not?

Heather Lansdown (heatherlansdown) | 15 comments Black matter by Blake crouch is on my list for this one.

message 56: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) looking through my GR shelves... not too many are completely image-free, but i had several i thought i'd share, in case there's anything of interest for this prompt.

Selection Day by Aravind Adiga Possession A Romance by A.S. Byatt LaRose by Louise Erdrich Oreo by Fran Ross Did You Ever Have a Family by Bill Clegg 13 Ways of Looking at the Novel by Jane Smiley This is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett Wave by Sonali Deraniyagala Drunk Mom by Jowita Bydlowska The Writing Life by Annie Dillard

I agree, that's a graphic behind the words. I wouldn't count it either. However, I read the book - and it is awesome! I'm not sure it was AS good as Dark Matter, but what is? I loved the premise of this book, and loved the ride while reading it! Enjoy it!

I read this for a magical realism prompt this year. It's a pretty dark story. But if you like dark and a bit twisted, you'll love it!

message 64: by Ally (last edited Dec 16, 2019 07:05AM) (new)

Ally (allybl) | 47 comments Two from my IRL TBR shelf are:

IQ (IQ, #1) by Joe Ide - (fiction)

The Art of Possibility by Rosamund Stone Zander - (non-fiction)
I'm going with this one possibly as it double dips with the Bloom Where You're Planted reading challenge for "self-help" I think. Plus, it's short!

(thanks to Neha for teaching me something new!)

To add a book cover you need to click on "add book/author" link above the comment box. Search for the book you want, and then below click on "Cover" to show the cover. And click Add.

Hope this helps :)

Okay--I think of digits as text, but I can see your point given how it is laid out! But I liked Recursion better than Dark Matter :)

It has graphics in the ext, so perhaps not. Plus there is a graphic below the title and the clouds in between some of the letters :)

I am linking a photo from the internet. There are no graphics outside of the actual letters, so it depends on if you count the pictures on the letters themselves.

message 71: by Brandon (new)

Brandon Harbeke | 698 comments These are pretty hard to find outside of some classics. Cover designers want to grab your attention or inform you in some way of the content or tone of the story.

Maybe one of those "blind date with a book" library specials could work. They are generally wrapped in plain paper with just a description of some sort on the front.

My library has an Agatha Christie collection that has every book with a black cover with the title and author's name on it. The only thing that would disqualify those for sticklers is a silhouette of the author's face on the front.

Sometimes cover designers grab our attention with a stark cover. Take a look at our Listopia, we've got over 200 books on the list, most of them quite modern.

Ah, that makes sense if you perceive this as a digit (#8?). But it's a symbol for infinity, not a number. So, I guess that's a bit of a nuanced difference. Regardless, I think we are not here to police each other's choices. :) If someone wants to consider it text, I say go for it!

message 76: by Drakeryn (new)

Drakeryn | 708 comments IMO, the infinity symbol still counts as a number/letter. Just like "3" is a symbol representing the number three, the infinity symbol represents infinity.

But I probably wouldn't count Recursion because of the maze pattern in the infinity symbol. To me, it crosses the line between "fancy typography" and "graphics in the text."

Hmmm honestly, particularly given the title, I think that really is a graphic of a wave. I probably wouldn't count it.

message 85: by W.J. (last edited Jan 02, 2020 01:23PM) (new)

W.J. Cintron | 7 comments I found a couple of books:

Velocity by Dean Koontz

Erotica:
The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty
The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty by A.N. Roquelaure

I think I'm going with this one since I have it on my shelf:
The Road
The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Relentless
Relentless by Dean R. Koontz

A book of poems:
The Waste Land and Other Poems
The Waste Land and Other Poems by T.S. Eliot

I don't know if this one counts, because of the light:
How the Light Gets in: Writing as a Spiritual Practice
How the Light Gets in Writing as a Spiritual Practice by Pat Schneider

Please, can someone let me know if this one counts? I have two books, only letters besides the rays/lines. Does it counts? If not, I'll read The Road.
I'll Give You the Sun
I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
or?
I'll Give You the Sun
I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson

The Sky Is Everywhere
The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

This one Counts???
Love Me Back by Merritt Tierce

Hope it helps!! :)

Non-fiction:
Everyday Sexism by Laura Bates Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge

Fiction:
A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi
