SOLVED. Mystery by well known writer theme is old age. [s]

I thought this was Ruth Rendell's last book, but when I looked at her last it was a) too recent and b) not on the topic.
In the book, in addition to a mystery where old people are dying off, characters in the book get phone calls from a mysterious someone who seems to be Death.
Don't remember any spoilers.
I think it was this writer's last book before she or he (probably she) died.

Perhaps Memento Mori by Muriel Spark? It wasn't her last book, though - she was surprisingly young when she wrote it (about 40, from memory. My book club read it earlier this year).

Thank you. I'm sure this is right. I could only remember "female author that I love" and Muriel Spark, like Ruth Rendell, fits the bill.
