Feel free to join in our buddy read of Memory In Death.

Eve Dallas is one tough cop. It should take more than a seemingly ordinary middle-aged lady to make her fall apart. But when that lady is Trudy Lombard, all bets are off. Just seeing Trudy at the station plunges Eve back to the days when she was a vulnerable, traumatized young girl—and trapped in foster care with the twisted woman who now sits smiling in front of her.

Trudy claims she came all the way to New York just to see how Eve is doing. But Eve’s fiercely protective husband, Roarke, suspects otherwise—and a blackmail attempt by Trudy proves his suspicion correct. Eve and Roarke just want the woman out of their lives. But someone else wants her dead. And when her murder comes to pass, Eve and Roarke will follow a circuitous and dangerous path to find out who turned the victimizer into a victim.

This is a good one!!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
I know a few are still finishing up Origin...we'll move forward with Memory when everyone is ready. I'll be listening to it at the end of the week, I think.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Are you ready to begin Memory?

I'll start the audio over the weekend & hope to listen as I begin prep for all my Thanksgiving guests. Thank goodness for audios as I clean, cook, & get ready for Turkey Day!

Kris (My Novelesque Life) (mynovelesquelife) | 9 comments I know what you mean...I listen to audio while I cook, clean, and sometimes when I brush my teeth lol

Michelle | 2651 comments Don't know how I missed this. But I was just thinking today I'm ready for my next Eve and Roarke fix. I'll try and start this soon.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments Hi everyone,

I hope everyone who celebrates had a Happy Thanksgiving. I'm a little behind but I'll be back on track tomorrow.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
You're fine, Sharon. I'm really behind in starting this one myself. I thought it would be last week but got tied up finishing some others & then Thanksgiving stopped my reading for the week as I entertained guests.

Who else is reading Memory for our BR?

lorii (Loriidae) Hi everyone, just found this group - I last read this series in its entirety when it was up to about 33 or 34. I first discovered Naked in Death in May, 2004 and every couple of years I have re-read the entire series from wo to go, before reading the latest ones. But it is taking too much time to do that now so I thought I might jump in with you and for the first time begin partway through the series with Memory, although I will probably slip back and re-read Naked as it is my absolute favourite. Looking forward to meeting you all. Janet

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
Welcome, Janet!

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Happy to have you join us, Janet. Welcome to the group & BR! :)

Michelle | 2651 comments Welcome Janet.
And don't worry Sandra. I haven't started either. A bit of a mad week for me.

lorii (Loriidae) thanks everyone I am enjoying reading the threads here, my real life friends don't approve of my "fluff" reading habits (romance) and I quote "I find it surprising that such an intelligent person as Janet would read such fluff" said from one girlfriend to the other in my presence. So it is nice to be among like minded people. Currently re-reading Sylvester by Georgette Heyer so will start Memory after that

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
I have one of those friends also, Lorridae! Love her to death but she shouldn't condemn what she hasn't tried or read. I really hate when all romance is thrown into one big ugly pot & labeled "trash"...it is so much more.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
If they only knew the reading pleasure they're sacrificing:) Doesn't bother me a lick anymore that I have friends and acquaintances feeling this way.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Exactly Jonetta! I don't care either. I know how much pleasure I get from some of these series. Their loss! lol

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments Getting back into my reading/listening.

I forgot how much I like this book. I know a lot of people prefer the early books in this series but I love watching Eve & Roarke's relationship grow. They depend on each other now.

Eve's relationship with the support characters is so much stronger too. I love Summerset's conversation with Roarke by the fire especially this part.

“You gave me my life. You did,” he insisted when Summerset made a protesting sound. “And I worked— in my fashion— to build this place. I asked you to tend it for me. You’ve never let me down. But I needed her. The one thing, the only thing that could make this place home.”
“She’s not what I’d have chosen for you.”
“Oh.” With a half-laugh, Roarke bit into the cookie. “That I know.”
“But she’s right for you. The one for you.” His smile was slow. “Despite, or maybe due to, her many flaws.”

I think this is the first time he really admits to Roarke that Eve is his perfect partner.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Ahhh...thanks for sharing that one, Sharon. This series is loaded with quotes that are so heart touching and also with the snarky, funny quotes. Love that Summerset finally said it outloud.

Michelle | 2651 comments I think your right. That us the first he told Roarke. He might have had a similar chat with Eve because I remember him say it before. That she would not have been what he choose for Roarke.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
I love this discussion between Roarke and Summerset.

Michelle | 2651 comments So I've finally started. Love how she always surprises Peabody by making her primary. You go Peabody.

Michelle | 2651 comments just wondering if summerset also contacted roa after she went up the stairs. you know she must have looked awful. lordy I hate Trudy!!

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
What a truly miserable woman. I can't say I was really upset when she turned up dead.

I LOVED the office scene with Roarke. Couldn't you just see Roarke in his coolness, bringing out scary Roarke.

I love that scene too. I almost wish she had lived a little longer so she could experience another run in with Roarke. Roarke isn't one of her frighten charges who gives in to her demands easily.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
Didn't you love how they described her leaving his office?

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
This was one of those cases where I was really stuck for quite some time trying to unravel whodunit.

Were you at all sympathetic to Bobby? Should he have known what was happening to Eve when she lived with them?

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
I was also touched by Eve's memory of the teens living across the street. The simplest act made such a difference for her.

I think Bobby was just a kid himself. He knew his mother wasn't treating the girls right that is why he gave her the sandwich. I think he was intimidated by his mom even though she wasn't mean to him.

I didn't expect the crazy wife as the killer until late in the book. I like how this whole mystery unfolds.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments Jonetta wrote: "I was also touched by Eve's memory of the teens living across the street. The simplest act made such a difference for her."

This is another scene where I wanted more. I wanted Roarke to track him down and let Eve know that he was ok and made a good life for himself.

I love how Eve described the air board ride as the best day of her life. It brings home how tough her life was to this point.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments I love that Peabody isn't afraid to call Roarke and how he drops everything to come home to Eve.

When Roarke came home and found her in the shower my first thought is she is trying to wash the memories away. Roarke just steps in the shower and gets her. Love him

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
I'd never given much thought to what happened to her after she escaped her father and before she joined the academy. This story told so much more about Eve.

That's a good point...washing away the memories. Hadn't thought of that.

That was pretty brave of Peabody to make that call, knowing Eve might have ripped into her.

I do too...Eve brushes Peabody off but Peabody knows who to call to be there for Eve. Loved Peabody for that.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Peabody being so nervous at interviewing Roarke after Trudy is killed...Roarke asking her afterwards "How'd we do?" You can feel Peabody's relief when it's over. love it.

Roarke's anger at Eve when she declares Trudy is her problem - he should stay out of it - she would NOT have told him...oh my! Roarke's sweaty workout working off his irritation & frustration - oh yes! ;)

Eve's apology to Roarke when she realizes what she's done...heartfelt.

Eve crying on Dennis Mira's shoulder - surprising & very touching. Loved it.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
I don't know what it is about Dennis Mira that reduces Eve to mush when he's around:)

Michelle | 2651 comments I agree with all the comments.

@ Jonetta. I too hadn't thought about what happened after. I sorted of thought that yes she had gone into the system but that for the most part it was better than what was. I also loved that Peabody called in the big guns.
Love, loved how she ran out of his office.

@ Sharon. Love , love ,Loved that scene of Roarke getting her out if the shower. Everything just built up to it. And Roarke delivers.

@Sandra. And then! Did not see Eve's jealousy. But I must say I would have felt the same in some way. They had just spent thanksgiving with all of Roarke's family, so it is fresh in her mind. Who wouldn't have issues about where they came from? But then after ? The make up is just has good ;-)

I also wanted to mention the courtroom scene. We hardly ever get to scene after the case close. And this is really close for all of them.

The theme of closure is strong and starts early !!

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments Jonetta wrote: "I don't know what it is about Dennis Mira that reduces Eve to mush when he's around:)"

I think Dennis Mira is the way she pictures the father that she always wanted. I love almost every scene with Dennis Mira.

I think some of Roarke's anger is also his realization that he was given a gift that Eve will never have. He was upset with her that she was pushing him away and striking out but he understood it.

I thought that, too, Sharon. He's her idealized version of a father in the flesh.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
I agree. She looks around at everything - a tree with "at least 100 presents", the family atmosphere & there's Dennis...the perfect father.

Michelle - I think it probably hurt Roarke also - Eve's remark about him not knowing because he had family...he found his family. It seemed harsh coming from Eve but there it was - her jealousy over him also having what she never had. Her saying: No one ever loved me - cared about me. And a really good thing that she got it out rather than continue to let it fester. And, of course, how badly she felt after she realized what she had said to him - her apology. Make up sex wasn't bad either! ;)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
I always thought her feeling was just plain...normal. I agree, Sandra, it needed to come out.

Dawn | 3250 comments This was an emotional read for me that wasn't topped until NY2D as far as the abuses/neglect Eve suffered as a child. It brings home her negative feelings about "the system" in other books. From her reaction to the initial meeting, her reaction to Roarke helping, her attachment to Dennis Mira and the air board experience, it all had me an emotional wreck.

As for Bobby, I wanted to me really mad at him, but then had to realize he was also a child. I think I could have hated him if it hadn't been for that sandwich memory.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15054 comments Mod
Yeah, that's where I ended up with Billy, too.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3059 comments I like Nadine filming Peabody after the trial and then dashing off to follow Eve as she raced after a purse snatcher. Eve does give Nadine good air time.

Thanx for saying that. I had overlooked Roarke's take on this. I thought that that point had come up before but I think Eve verbalising it really hit. And hard. I glad that they both talked about it. It just proves that you truly can hurt the one you love the most. This really is a subject that has many sides. For both of them.

Can anyone say they didn't love Eve taking charge of the ballroom !? I almost wish I could see it for myself.

message 46: by Dawn (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dawn | 3250 comments I did love the commander in charge with all those ballroom minions lol.

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11211 comments Mod
Yes, Michelle, I loved when Eve finally stood up & took charge of the ballroom preparations! It was fun to see her thought process as she realized she just needed to approach it the same as she would the bunch at the office. And as Roarke said, I think a few of them left scared to death but the job got done! lol

lorii (Loriidae) I love how Roarke still carries her button in his pocket.

Michelle | 2651 comments That always touches me. The most innocuous thing, a button. And after two year still in his pocket.
