SOLVED. Book with a girl standing on a cliff on the cover. [s]

Hi all: I read this book about a hundred years ago. (I believe I was in late elementary school, maybe 5th grade, so I probably read it in the mid/late 2000s, like 2006 or 07.) I remember extremely little about it, but I still think about it a lot. It was a middle grade book, I think, probably aimed at 6th/7th grade.
In the book there was a girl who was maybe a young teenager, like 12 to 14, and she found herself caring for a baby and wandering around without any adults. It was vaguely English, with heaths and cottages, and they were near the ocean - I believe the cover was the girl standing on a cliff with her hair blowing in the wind. The only scene I really remember is she had to find food for the kid so they found themselves in an abandoned cottage. There was a big pot on the stove that was cold and there was moldy soup inside and a loaf of moldy bread. But they were so hungry they had to clean off the mold and ate it anyway.
It was kind of vaguely apocalyptic, but it never had a very specific time period or setting as far as I can remember.

I still haven't managed to get my hands on a copy yet, unfortunately, but it does seem to be right.
