Jo Morton | 39 comments 6. A book with a mode of transportation on the cover
☐ On Ocean Boulevard By Mary Alice Monroe (Monroe #6) Released 05/19/2020 Finished:
What form transportation is on the cover? This book is the 6th in a series of books I’ve been reading for awhile now. The form of transportation is car.
Do you pick books by their cover? Sad to say but yes the cover determines if I read the back cover.

2. What transportation did it have on the cover?
There is a pony and planes in the background

3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers? Not usually. I had this on my TBR due to an episode of One Great Book and Modern Mrs. Darcy. It just happened to fit a few challenges.

Stephanie | 93 comments I don't pick books based on the cover, but I do appreciate a great one! I read The River by Peter Heller for this prompt. A canoe is on the cover and it's all about a river journey in Canada that goes wrong. I really enjoyed this one!

Sarah (prairielily) | 177 comments I am reading Tight by Torrey Maldonado. It is a middle years book with subway cars on the cover.

Tight by Torrey Maldonado

I am a sucker for a good cover! But the description has to be a bit to my liking. I'll try a pretty book about murder every time!

I am reading Missing, Presumed by Susie Steiner

2. What transportation did it have on the cover?
It has a train on the cover

3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers?
I wouldn't say I pick books based on their covers, however, a good cover certainly draws me into reading the blurb which is how I then decide if I want to read the book or not

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 452 comments What are you reading for this category? Enduring Love by Ian McEwan
What transportation did it have on the cover a hot air balloon
Enduring Love by Ian McEwan
Do you typically pick books based on their covers? I can't deny it plays a part. Unless it's a book I've heard of and am already interested in reading, then cover (as well as author and title) is what will encourage me to even pick it up to get as far as reading the blurb. If it's a book I'm coming cold to, it's the blurb that will make the difference between me reading it or putting it back...but I wont get as far as reading the blurb if the cover hasn't got my attention.

This book has to have one of the best opening scenes ever - a bizarre but horrifying incident where a group of strangers rush to save a child from an out-of-control hot air balloon, recounted in exacting detail by one Joe Rose. Scientific writer, happily living with his partner Clarissa, who through his involvement in the botched rescue attempt attracts the obsessive attention of one of the others involved. A fanatical loner, Jed Parry is convinced that Joe loves him and takes to stalking him, seeing every denial of romantic interest on Joe's part as further proof that their love is enduring and will lead atheist Joe to God.

There are some amazing scenes in this book (the drug dealers in a farm house was a standout for me), and I loved the build up to the conclusion whilst even as a reader I questioned what was reality and who really was suffering from a psychiatric turmoil. I think that was what I enjoyed about the book. Well, that and McEwan's prose, which I think I've enjoyed in all the books of his that I've read (I think about six now). This is no Atonement, but I enjoyed it more than some of his others. And that's even taking into account my loss of appetite for middle class characters...possibly because this isn't exactly a rich people problems story. The situation is so out there, and that is what really makes the book.

Erika | 22 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
I read Nowhere But Here by Katie McGarry for this prompt. It's a contemporary YA novel about a girl visiting her estranged family which also features a motorcycle gang. I've owned it pretty much since it came out but never got around to reading it so this felt like the perfect time to actually do so.
2. What transportation did it have on the cover?
A motorcycle
3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers?
I try to never pick a book based solely on it's cover (unless a challenge calls for it) but I would say that covers definitely influence what I read. An amazing/intriguing cover is going to draw my attention and prompt me to read the book summary but no matter how beautiful it is, a cover isn't enough to get me to read a book I don't think sounds good.

I listened to News of the World by Paulette Jiles . The icon on my iPod is tiny but I knew most of the book takes place on a wagon journey in the old West. It turns out you can just see the wagon in the bottom right of the cover.

I must admit I am influenced by covers, especially when buying used books that I have never heard of before.

Around the World in Eighty Days

I read The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde, who is one of my favourite authors.

2. What transportation did it have on the cover?

There is a car on the cover.

3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers?

Not exclusively, but a good cover can make me interested enough to check what it's about.

message 62: by Alesha (new)

Alesha (musicgal17) | 39 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
I read The Other People for this category.

2. What transportation did it have on the cover?
There is a car on the cover, illuminated by its headlights.

3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers?
No, I can't say that I usually do. I might pick up a book out of interest due to the cover catching my eye, but I always read the blurb to see if it's something I'd actually be interested in reading.

The Other People hovered around a 3.5 star rating for me. I'd recommend it, especially if you are new to the thriller genre. I read a lot of thrillers, so many of the plot twists didn't surprise me, but it was still an enjoyable read.

The Man in the Brown Suit

There's a great big steamer ship on the cover, which does actually play a large part in the story.

I do judge books by their covers, and I don't feel bad about it at all. There are a lot of good artists in the world and there's just no need for publishers to print books with shitty covers.

The Real-Town Murders by Adam Roberts

3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers?
When I was a library reader I did...I would walk up and down and look at whatever stood out to me. Now I read on kindle I'm less swayed by covers.

message 70: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments For this prompt, I chose Where the Crawdads Sing based on others' recommendations. It has a canoe on the cover, which is Kya's main source of transportation, other than walking. I don't normally choose books based solely on their cover unless it is for a reading challenge. A cover may draw my attention, but I read the synopsis to see if the story is interesting to me.

Thief of Time (Discworld, #26; Death, #5) by Terry Pratchett

3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers?
Not really although I buy souvenir books on vacation and I buy those based on the cover (if there's a skyline on the cover it goes to the top of my list)

Amy | 35 comments 1. What are you reading for this category? I read The River by Peter Heller

2. What transportation did it have on the cover? A canoe

3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers? I think I pick a book on a couple different criteria, more the title of the book than the cover. But I do scan by cover first I guess.

Anna (annaik) | 401 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?

I read The Wolf and the Watchman for this category but I read the swedish original edition called 1793.

This is a historical crime novel that I liked a lot.

2. What transportation did it have on the cover?

Old wooden ships. 1793 by Niklas Natt och Dag
Hard to see but they are there.

Interestingly the covers for the editions in the different languages are quite different. The Wolf and the Watchman by Niklas Natt och Dag

3. Do you typically pick books based on their covers?

Not usually. Sometimes when I have hard to decide which book to read and are choosing between a few, the cover can be the last determining factor.

I'd count it. It doesn't say it has to be a vehicle, just a mode of transportation. Walking is a way of getting around; plus that's a great book.

Emily I read this one:

6. A Book with a Mode of Transportation on the Cover: Illustrated Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone

it was probably my 10th or 11th time reading this book but my first time reading the illustrated version. The illustrations are beautiful and add a nice visual along with the story. Reading HP just fills me with such nostalgic happiness, this was a huge win!

message 89: by Jackie, Solstitial Mod (new)

I would say if you can tell that it's a magic flying broom then yes. Like if it's clear on the cover that this is a witch's broom that she uses for things other than cleaning, go for it. If you see a broom next to a cottage maybe not lol.

Wayward Son (Simon Snow, #2) by Rainbow Rowell

I'd be lying if I said I'm not attracted to books with pretty covers but I have been disappointed way too many times to always pick books based on their covers. I pick them based on the blurb and ratings.

message 94: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tracky75) | 49 comments Of course I had to pick Dog Driven by Terry Lynn Johnson for this one, because ... dogsled! My GR TBR list was very helpful on this one! The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes

I typically have to like something in the summary to pick up a book, but covers definitely entice me to read the summary!

message 97: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Peterson | 700 comments I'm reading Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe for this prompt, which has a train on the cover:

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg

The train is relatively important to the story, since it centers around the town Whistle Stop, which is a railroad town, right off the train tracks.

I don't think I generally pick books based off their covers, though I know I'm influenced by them. I pick books primarily through recommendations, but I think that bad covers can sometimes put me off a book for awhile. I try to add to my TBR regardless of the cover and then hope that I'll get around to the ugly ones eventually! I think the Fried Green Tomatoes cover is pretty charming, though (the book is also charming, so it matches well - the book is a little too charming for my personal taste, actually!)
