Peter | 2 comments So I think I read this book in the early 2000s, a battered mass market paperback copy. I have this really unfortunately vague sense of it but this is a mystery that's been nagging at me for years. I don't _think_ reading this book was just a dream but I can't be certain.

I feel like there's a storyteller telling the main story in the back room of a tent/shop in a busy marketplace in the middle east, maybe Jerusalem. Time flips between the storyteller and the story. I think the storyteller was telling a fantastical story of his life, and maybe that he was centuries old, so the story he was telling took place potentially multiple centuries ago. There may have been hash involved, or other drugs. I remember it being fascinating. Maybe the storyteller met with some demons or old gods or powerful spirits in the desert, maybe battled them? Storyteller may also have been a warrior of some sort in the story. Whether it took place there or not, I do think Jerusalem was involved somehow. Also maybe backgammon.

It's also totally possible that I'm conflating some other books I've read into this description as well. I'd love it if anyone had any thoughts. Thanks for reading!

Peter, can we eliminate Shrine of the Desert Mage by Stephen Goldin?

Peter | 2 comments Hi Kris,
Thanks for the response! Yes, we can unfortunately eliminate that one, though it looks like an interesting read. :)

I wish I had more to add. The thing that keeps coming back to me is a lone warrior in a desert battling -- something -- a demon or an elder god or somesuch. I can't even remember why they were fighting, but I feel as if the warrior traveled a long way to find the creature, and wound up winning the battle. I don't think that was a central piece of the story, either, just something that's stuck in my head.

One other thing that I think: I think it's a standalone novel, not a part of a series.

Again, thanks for the response.
Peter
