Christian Novel about man who creates a model in which his creations come to life

I read a book over 20 years ago that was written be a Christian author and would have been found in Christian fiction. I can only remember vague details. The basic plot summary was
- a man creates a model of a world in his garage
- the people he created somehow come to life
- over time the inhabitants of the world begin to war
- the creator creates some basic laws for the to live by
- eventually the creations begin to worship the law book
- when the creator tries to correct them, they ignore the creator

Please help...I would really love to read this book again. It really helped me creatively to understand God's working throughout our world's history.

Do you think it was a male author? Was the author well known in the Christian publishing world?

Yes, male author, and although I can't remember specifically he was well published and carried in Christian bookstores. He was definitely not obscure.
