So one of our group members suggested having a tandem group read/group watch discussion, and our December Group Read is the time!

How does this work?

A book that has been made into a movie with a significant amount of action/adventure content qualifies for this discussion. It can be a graphic novel, so feel free to nominate those as well.

Remember that it has to meet our other qualifications for group reads and watches listed below.

(Please recall that we don't vote for books we've already had as a group read--There's a link below to check our list of previous group reads).

Here are the other considerations:

1. One nomination per group member. The books must be nominated with a Goodreads link by clicking on 'add book/author'. If a book does not have a Goodreads link, it will not be added to the poll.
2. Books need to be readily available, ie, in print (able to buy new or in ebook format).
3. Books should have some degree of action/adventure content.
4. Past group reads are not eligible to be nominated again. The past group discussions remain open for members to comment. You can view the list of past reads here:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

5. Books must be either standalone or first in a series (or they may be later in a series if constructed to be read as a standalone).
6. Authors are asked not to nominate their own books or solicit nominations from members.

Please feel free to include a blurb for the book so others know a little about the book, along with your Goodreads book link.

Additionally:

We are NOT talking about new releases in the movie theaters, but movies that are easily available for viewing on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc.

So as long as it meets these qualifications, it's fair game!

The poll will go up on November 9th.

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 180 comments My nomination is based on a true story Serpico

DescriptionFrank Serpico (Al Pacino) is an idealistic New York City cop who refuses to take bribes, unlike the rest of the force. His actions get Frank shunned by the other officers, and often placed in dangerous situations by his partners. When his superiors ignore Frank's accusations of corruption, he decides to go public with the allegations. Although this causes the Knapp Commission to investigate his claims, Frank has also placed a target on himself.

Kanishka Sarkar | 22 comments How about "The Martian" by Andy Weir

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills — and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit — he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

I am going to nominate Timeline by Michael Crichton Timeline by Michael Crichton

In an Arizona desert, a man wanders in a daze, speaking words that make no sense. Within twenty-four hours he is dead, his body swiftly cremated by his only known associates. Halfway around the world, archaeologists make a shocking discovery at a medieval site. Suddenly they are swept off to the headquarters of a secretive multinational corporation that has developed an astounding technology. Now this group is about to get a chance not to study the past but to enter it. And with history opened up to the present, the dead awakened to the living, these men and women will soon find themselves fighting for their very survival -- six hundred years ago.

The Movie is available on Amazon Prime and Showtime to name a few.

Serpico is out of print, so we can't read that as a group read. Sorry about that.

Same thing I said to Matthew. You need to include a link. This one's a freebie. :)

sorry but my phone app doesn't have that option, its easy for people to use the search engine though that's how I find the books I read on here it only takes a few seconds

message 14: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Matthew wrote: " no thanks im not going to pay £400 for a laptop or pc because some people don't have 30 seconds to search up a book in a search engine ..."

Instead of using the app on your phone, you can use a browser & follow the group's guidelines. You might not realize, but without a link, not all books are easy to find or figure out, even when both a title & author are posted. We recently had a lot of confusion over a couple of books in another group.

Also, moderators aren't paid for their time. Extra minutes trying to figure out what people mean is a hardship for them. It's worse when they make a mistake & it isn't caught until the poll is live. So please take the time to post correctly. It might seem like a minor detail to you, but it's not.

message 15: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Matthew wrote: "so that means you read my second post to and ignored point about the browser..."

I didn't agree with it & pointed out why. Also, the app isn't 'perfectly good'. I've read a number of complaints about it & it obviously doesn't allow using the full range of features for the site.

Again, remember that the mod is a volunteer. Helping her out by acceding to a request that everyone else seems to manage just seems polite.

message 16: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Matthew wrote: "are you going to buy me a laptop or a pc then ? , some how I doubt it. until then its impossible for me to do links"

No, I'm going to apologize because I thought you could use a browser on your device instead of the app & get to the book links. I could last time I tried, but that was probably a year ago. I just tried now & my phone's browser doesn't show the book links. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

What you can do is find the book, copy & paste the URL into your comment. Between that, the book title & author, the mod will be able to quickly make sure she puts the correct book in the poll. As I mentioned before, just a title & author often aren't good enough, so do include the URL to the correct book.

message 17: by Jenny (new)

Jenny a.k.a....Jenny from the block | 180 comments Actually, you don't need a computer to add the good reads app, which is what I use exclusively.
This is all from my phone. So if I can do this anyone can; so give this a try and let's be happy and stop the negativity.

For example; next time I'll nominate:

Hey Matthew. Maybe this isn't the group for you. I think that you might do better somewhere else because of the concern you have with following group rules and getting along with other group members. I haven't been able to check on this thread in a while, so you may have done this already, but I'm going to have to remove you from the group.

I apologize to the group members for the dramatic scene.

Kirsten (kmcripn) After all the drama, are noms still open?

How about Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household which was turned into the classic 1941 film Man Hunt starring Walter Pidgeon. (According to IMDb it is available on Prime Video for free.)

Hi, Gail. I'm so sorry about this. I hope you will be willing to continue participating in the group. This is definitely not the norm.

Hi Kirsten. I'm sorry about all that. The December nominations are closed, but I'm opening up January nominations right now.

Did you want to drop over and make it there? I'll post a link soon.
