Most of my GR friends rated it four or five stars, so I'm looking forward to this one.

Nicole | 143 comments I just started today. It's slow going (not in a bad way), so I'm pleased we're doing it over 4 weeks.

Matthew | 86 comments I started Monday! I've haven't read such an angry voice in awhile. I also haven't read anything quite so musical either. I'm reminded of The Recognitions with the family dynamics. I like it!

Nicole | 143 comments Yeah the dad is....something.

ETA: from a review in the Washington Post, this struck me as being right on the nose:

As he once said, folks who go to books for lifelike characters or plots “are really not interested in literature. They are interested in folks.”

Gregsamsa | 74 comments SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION:

If you're interested in an inexcusably blathery and spoiler-rich review that's nearly as long as the book, my review can be easily accessed by clicking on the link below:

I also posted a review here https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Do yourself a favor and read Gregsamsa's instead. Excellent review Greg. I will have to try that dip of despair.

Amanda (tnbooklover) I just started today. I'm really liking it so far and hope to catch up to you guys next week.

Gregsamsa | 74 comments Thanks for linking your review, James, as I missed it the first time around. I'm always interested in learning how people came across authors. Gass through Eggars? Whodathunk?

A cool web time waster along those lines is here:

http://www.literature-map.com/

You enter an author's name and it spatially arranges other names based on some kinda algorithm deal which is way better than Goodreads'.

Zadignose | 444 comments That map never even heard of Heinrich Wittenwiler!

...until now...

Gregsamsa | 74 comments That's because you never scanned it and spread the .pdf Ring joy.

Zadignose | 444 comments Whatever version does happen to exist in the world is probably due for a copyedit, eh? And a .pdf version that's actually viewable.

Gregsamsa | 74 comments Unfortunately Project Gutenberg does not have it, nor that other guy you mentioned in your ring review.

For those who are interested. Me, I have access to an older copy at the library. :)

Matthew | 86 comments I knew about the new NYRB edition but thanks for the link! Wonderful article.
