#424 - link is broken
#426 - if it was published on the author's website, it counts as a valid ebook.

Yes, please merge it with place holder. Thank you.

Please delete:

Not a book and the ASIN leads to:

as the librarian note someone else left here says, it is a single chapter, not the entire book.
Thank you

FYI, *not* same thing. Pls undo ASAP.

#447 Merges can't be "undone." I'm sorry if I made an erroneous request! The only recourse would be to re-add the short story if indeed it does belong on GR.

pls re-combine w/ others after delete. (fair warning--it's atwood's handmaid's tale so could take a while) thx!

merges can be undone. step #2 = delete would be problematic.
(either way, no worries--world won't end)

thanks, Karma! But unfortunately, merge=delete. Combines can be undone, but a merge is permanently merged (deleted) :(

It looks like in the meantime #445 has been edited by another librarian adding details for another edition.

Sorry, folks--hate to semi-derail thread but want to confirm terminology here.
Cassandra, I think that you & I are referring to different actions. For me, plain 'merge' = combine (eg, when lonely edition combined (read: merged) w/ other editions. 'Delete' = edition actually deleted from GR database.
However, b4 one can delete any edition, one must/should first *merge* (read: combine) w/ other editions so ratings & reviews aren't deleted as well.
Thus, there is no 'merge=delete' as a single act. It's a 2-step process-- or should be :) --and #1 merge *can* be undone if #2 delete not yet performed.
AFAIK, the above remains correct & I d/n recall any notices re: changes in procedure/policy. So to kind folks here, pls do correct any errors in my post. TIA!

You will only cause confusion if you keep referring to "merge" that way
Per Librarian Manual, "merging" includes "deleting."..."
Perhaps in general sense //here//, but not as explained in my post?
Merging may 'include' deleting but it's not *same* as (whereas Cassandra used '=' in her post). Even manual states 'Merging means combining two editions that are actually duplicates, and then deleting one.'
Thus, 2-step process as I noted. So a merge can be undone if delete not yet performed.
ETA: so perhaps, I should've written that "combine' can be undone, even tho point was on 'merge=delete'?
In any case, #440 was indeed "deleted"("merged"), so can't be undone
Yes, Andrew--that's why I ended my post #458 w/ (either way, no worries--world won't end)
ETA: originally posted to prevent delete, even if *combine* already started).
etc: for clarification //here//

Merging is not simply combining. Merging may consist of two actions:
1. Combine (in case the duplicate is not combined with the merge target yet)
2. Delete duplicate.
If the duplicate is already combined with its merge target, merging just means deleting the duplicate.
ETA that is why you often see in these threads "please merge into the default".
See also rivka's OP:
"For editions to be merged with something other than the work default, please remember to separate out the two editions for merging before posting in this thread."

Yes, I'm aware. Note that terms used in my post #462 solely limited to clarify why Cassandra & I seemed at odds & why I thought actual delete of valid entry could be prevented.
ETA: To prevent any further confusion or folks reading posts in vaccum, pls note:
#440 = req for 'delete/merge?' of valid SS entry.
#443 =req confirmed
#447 = my req for undo
#457 = #447 Merges can't be "undone."
To which I replied in #458 that merges can be undone. step #2 = delete would be problematic..
Noting 'step #2' implies a step #1, no? And that I knew difference?

About an hour ago, I created entries for a forthcoming book by Justin Robinson with ISBNs of 9781936460939 (Paperback) and 9781936460922 (ebook). For some reason, the entries are not visible or findable so I cannot edit them, though the ISBNs are shown as taken. When I try to click on their links I get the message "Page Unavailable: An unexpected error occurred. We will investigate this problem as soon as possible — please check back soon!"
If this cannot be corrected, please delete both entries; I'm perfectly willing to re-enter them from the get-go.
Many thanks in advance,
Candlemark & Gleam
(Justin Robinson's publisher)

Merges can't be undone. A merge is a deletion in such a way that any shelvings/ratings/reviews are transferred to the remaining or default edition. This can only be done if both editions are combined, which may already be the case. I.e., there is not always a step #1 (combining).

Thank you and sorry, I didn't notice it was different.

lethe, pls re-read my post #469, esp ETA.

I did. Merges *cannot* be undone. If a merge has been completed, the edition is gone. The combine step (not always there) is not the merge.
Maybe it's better to start a new thread if you want to discuss this further. This is essential terminology, but taking up too much space in this thread.

444 Merging placeholders
445 Someone has added ebook info to the placeholder and someone else has combined them. Should we merge the placeholder and then add that edition afterward, or should we leave it as is? (I will leave it bc I don't see a good ebook source)
448 Merged
449 Either the link is wrong or someone deleted it without a merge target
450 Merging the placeholder edition and left the correct Kindle edition
452 Someone already merged this; please leave deletions to superlibrarians as mentioned in the topic--I have NAB'ed it since that part was left undone.

Good grief. Fine, I'll fall on sword & look stubborn on open thread.
Firstly, disagreement is NOT 'essential terminology' but actual concepts & processes.
Secondly, yes, a *completed* merge c/n be undone. But stating merge=delete is NOT correct. Also, blanketly stating that merge c/n be undone is incorrect under certain circumstances.
Thirdly, posting outside of context at hand is reason why simple clarification is 'taking up too much space in this thread'.
Re-read my post #469 again & note specific context in which all this arose (2 steps required).
Mistakes happen--we're all human. I wouldn't have even bothered to respond back @ #457 except that I d/n want Cassandra to feel bad. Wanted to let her know that sometimes, erroneous posting could be fixed if caught in time.
I thought to PM Cassandra about #457/458 but figured that clarification would help those who posted here in future. Figured that it'd be nice for others to know as well--again, re: similar situation involving a *2-step merge*.
Clearly not. So, apologies to all for letting my teaching side get the better of me & taking up space on this thread.

No, but merging is. Sometimes regular users ask for editions to be 'merged' when they mean 'combined', and usually the librarian answering the request explains to them that 'merging' means 'deleting' on Goodreads. (See also the title of this thread.)

Pls delete blank/placeholder @ https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
(next up is 1st edition Kindle so no mix-up w/ 2nd)
Thx

This is older version of a novel (A Thing of Dark Imaginings) and is out of print.
A current version is on Goodreads at
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4....

You created an alternate cover edition for it - but the asin doesn't exist on Amazon.com https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
Is a kindle with that ASIN still available and with which cover?
The record you list as current version is a different edition (Paperback vs Kindle) so it's not the current version of that rainbow colored kindle.

to be combined back to https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

No info other than date for second edition so allocated to ebook. After delete, pls re-combine w/ other editions (orig title = The Baddest Bride In Texas). thx!

Matched up w/ ANTH edition by date. After delete, pls re-combine w/ other editions. thx!
