21% - (view spoiler)[For some reason, I thought this book would be Russian/East-European folklore based. But so far, I'm getting like Asian/Middle-East/African vibes. (I know what I mean in my head, but I can't quite pinpoint where I'm thinking off haha)

I also didn't realise this would so many POVs. I think I need to read synopsises before jumping into stuff. It's giving me The Smoke Thieves vibes with all the seemingly random povs that will no doubt link up at some point in this book.

So I'm guessing that the girl that Hassan met at the refuge camp is Ephyra? I think Ephyra's pov might be my favourite so far but I'm looking forward to seeing how all these people connect. (hide spoiler)]

First quarter - (view spoiler)[Liking this enough but starting with four distinct protagonists made this feel off to a very slow start, as each of them were introduced. I'm intrigued to see them begin to merge, and to learn about the Grace abilities and threat from the Hierophant that have been mentioned. I think Anton and Jude's perspectives are my favourite, so far. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[I love sibling relationships so am enjoying learning more of Ephyra and Beru's relationship. I'm also glad we get a perspective from the both of them. I also like seeing their goals combine with Anton's .

I'm wondering if something more than friendship is brewing between Hector and Jude. I hope so! They seem to truly understand each other. I feel sorry for Jude and the future that fate has drawn for him. I hope he manages to find his own happiness.

I wasn't nearly as engaged with Hassan and Khepri's stories, until it was discovered that Prince Hassan was the last prophet!

Even though I'm enjoying this enough, the stakes feel low and the threat from the age of darkness never feels imminent. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[BERU IS DEAD!!! I did not see that coming. I had assumed she was just sick. I hope the outcome of this isn't that she will have to let her sister go, but I can't see another alternative right now.

I'm really enjoying the story-line but fail to feel much for any of the characters in it. I can't place quite why that is, though. I did feel sorrow for Hassan when he discovered his father had been murdered, though. I assumed it would happen as it now makes him King. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[Ooooh another prophecy exposed to Beru! And a betrayal revealed to Hassan! A lot went down at the beginning of the last quarter and everything the characters had been working towards and the reader believed was negated.

From there so much action featured and I flew through the final pages. This definitely could have benefited from some world building and more of an explanation of what the graces actually were, but it was such a fun and enjoyable read overall. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-10 (view spoiler)[I am really liking this so far. I really like the world-building. I swear, I keep looking at the map every five minutes. I am also really liking the multiple POVs.

I am really curious about Beru's illness and what the black handprint really is. Did someone with the Grace of Blood put it there? Though, when Ephyra kills someone it leaves a white handprint, so who knows?

I adore Jude and Hector. I think that they may secretly be in love. I may have it wrong. They could only be good friends and I am just reading it wrong. Since they swear vows of chastity it's hard to tell. They definitely have a deep connection.

Hassan seems very noble. I like him. He is so worried about his parents and about his countrymen. The poor boy feels useless sitting at his aunt's house when all he wants to do is help out and make a difference.

I am curious about this Hierophant person and how he or she connects to everyone in the story. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 11-30 (view spoiler)[Okay, wow. Some things are falling into place now a bit. So we got to hear the mysterious prophecy. Hassan is the last Prophet and he had his first vision. The Hierophant is the first harbinger, Ephyra is the second harbinger, and apparently Beru is the third harbinger. I was glad to finally figure out what the black handprint is. So Ephyra is a necromancer and brought Beru back to life. It kind of makes sense. The white handprints are left when she kills someone so I can totally see a black handprint to bring someone back from the dead. I kind of wonder what that means for Beru. Will this artifact that she and Ephyra are after really make it so she can live without having to kill others for their esha? And the artifact is linked to the Necromancer King, which I really want to know more about. And Hector is the boy that lived from the family that took in Ephyra and Beru. He has got some serious vengeance on his mind for Ephyra. So much so that he abandoned the Order and Jude to follow through with it. I was glad that Anton came back for Beru when Hector tried to hurt her. He seemed so shocked when he found out that she was the third harbinger. I am liking how all of these characters are interconnected by their pasts and futures. It's interesting so far and I am really liking it. (hide spoiler)]

75% (view spoiler)[So many betrayers. I wasn't sure about Illya but he certainly pulled one over on Ephyra. Now Anton and Jude are prisoners on their way to the Hierophant. I still wonder who the Hierophant is. And Hassan's cousin betrayed him and his followers. I wonder if his aunt is in on it as well?

I'm not surprised that Hector couldn't kill Beru. I had thought that perhaps there would be a romance between Jude and Hector but maybe there will be one between Hector and Beru? (hide spoiler)]

I can't believe that Hector died! I kind of saw it coming but I didn't want to believe it. I was hoping that it wouldn't happen. But Ephyra killed him to save Beru. I think that Beru was right to leave her sister there. She really was turning into a monster. Though I am curious about what Beru will do now on her own.

So Anton is the Prophet. I guess it was kind of obvious with all his esha sensory stuff. I didn't really grasp what exactly he was seeing in his vision other than Beru was in it. It will probably start to make more sense when the next book comes out.

I am kind of irked that we didn't get to find out who the Hierophant is.

Overall, I really liked it. I thought that everything was creative and the storytelling was good. I just wasn't as connected to the characters as I would have liked. But that could just be me. I have been feeling a lot of contemporary reads lately so I may not have been in the mood for a fantasy. Either way, this was still good. (hide spoiler)]
