(view spoiler)[Wow, I absolutely love Jean and Locke. Seeing how hard Jean had to deal with Ezi's death just broke me! And this friendship between Locke and Jean - makes me happy.

I also like that the author didn't give the Gentlemen Bastards a full win in their heist, the issue with the fake paintings make the story even more realistic for me. Fingers crossed about the poison! (hide spoiler)]

I finally started! I've finished chapter 2 and so far so good, I'm definitely loving Jean a lot in this book.

(view spoiler)[I'm surprised at how I'm already very used to the rest of the gang not being around. It's sad that they're gone but I've realised the series can still be good even without them. As long as no-one else dies!
Also, I'm really really curious about Sabetha. I can't believe how long the author has been just dropping her name and hinting at things but not telling us anything concrete. The curiosity is killing me! (hide spoiler)]

I realized recently that it was a 7 book series (hope he writes fast).. I also read somewhere that the 4th book should be out sometimes in spring 2015.

Finished chapter 14 (view spoiler)[I'm so relieved to finally understand what is happening in the prologue! All this time wondering what happened! Still I'm a bit disappointed that it's not part of a greater scheme...

Angel (view spoiler)[I agree with you. I was also expecting it to be some sort of a huge con that they were planning and it was a let down of sorts. In fact, I feel that all the cons (whatever few there were in this book) were not as flamboyant or as crazy as the ones in the first book. (hide spoiler)]

Reactions from Chapter 8-12

(view spoiler)[I think the book slowed down the last chapter or so in part one. I just wasn't that interested in reading about their learning process for being sailors. I knew things were going to pick up though when Caldris died! I did not expect that to happen at all!!

Chapter 8: Once Caldris died, it was no surprise that the rest of the crew mutinied against Locke. How lucky for them that the Poison Orchid was so close and decided to attack their ship! Otherwise they would have surely perished on the sea with no oars and no food!

Chapter 9: I love that the captain of the ship is a woman! I love this fantasy world where women are powerful and bada@@! I can't imagine bringing children onto a ship like that, it just seems like it would be so risky in the event that they had serious fighting to do.

Chapter 10: Locke redeems himself with a barrel of beer! That is really just too funny. And even though he doesn't give himself much credit, he did think quickly and used what he had available to kill those four men. Even though he isn't an amazing fighter, that is still impressive.

Chapter 11-12: I'm glad Jean gets to find a romance in this story. I wonder if he'll have to make some tough decisions later in the story because of his feelings for Ezri. I'm also glad Locke and Jean were able to make amends and that Locke went with Jean's plan to tell the truth.

Of course Locke has to show off his skills in Port Prodigal! I was happy to see him back in his element. (hide spoiler)]

Srividya- I agree that Lynch has done a really great job in his portrayal of Locke. He is flawed in many ways, but also is compassionate and so talented.

I just finished. It was a 4 star book for me, just because of the places where things dragged for me.

(view spoiler)[ Although I did enjoy their time at sea, it wasn't my favorite part and I liked more of the happenings in the city.

I was so sad when Ezri died!! It was so nice for Jean to find someone he loved and then to lose her so quickly was very difficult. Boo to that!!

I loved how Locke ended up stealing fakes of the paintings...it would have just been too easy if all of his plans had worked out exactly the way he wanted to.

I'm assuming that they didn't really get poisoned, because how else would there be a book three and possibly more books later on without Locke?! I think it was totally fitting for Locke to sacrifice himself for Jean, since Jean has protected him so many times. I really liked that part. (hide spoiler)]

I'm really looking forward to reading the third book at some point. I'm not sure I can fit it in this month, but maybe in January.

I agree with Greta, but I still gave it 5 stars because it's a great book nonetheless.

seriously, that was a hard part for me. Because I love Jean, and I loved that he had found someone for him. And of course Ezri was amazing too.
Why does Scott Lynch have to kill the good ones. I mean first the Sanza brothers and now Ezri *snif*

Haha, Locke and jean really didn't have any luck this time around, did they? I every time they've had a plan, something happened! And when we finally think that they managed to go through their plan at last, it is a fake !

I wondered, during the whole poison affair, is it wasn't a fake poison. Just a lie to manipulate them better. I guess we'll have to read the 3rd to know really what it was (hide spoiler)]

I finally finished this book, and I really enjoyed how women were captains too and that was a normal and accepted practice. After having just read A Feast for Crows where women are treated so fouly, this book was a breath of fresh air.

Re the ending and Jean and love, (view spoiler)[ I was so happy to see Jean with Ezri. They seemed like an awesome pair, and I was looking forward to seeing how Ezri fit in with Jean and Locke once the pirate shenanigans were over. And then the way she died...Ugh!
