Bethany | 32 comments I remember reading this book as a child, sometime in the 90s. The illustrations were in a cartoony style. In the story a star is perhaps caught by a child, or falls out of the sky by itself, and the child that has it wants to keep it. However it starts getting sick or weak (its light dimming) until the child or the child's family realises what is happening and puts it back in the sky. i think they try different things to fix it before finally returning it. I've searched for this before and haven't found it so far. It's not How to Catch a Star but it might have had a similar title: I don't remember unfortunately.

Thank you for your suggestion Ayshe! I appreciate it! The plot sounded really similar so I looked it up and read it quickly just now. Unfortunately I don't think this is the one -- although it sounds very like it so maybe I'm remembering it wrong! I just remember the star being cartoonish, a 3d shape almost, and yellow (instead of glittery red). And I feel like the child's family was involved in returning the star. But again, perhaps I've remembered it poorly!

Thank you for your response SBC! We can rule it out :) I've read Howl's Moving Castle a lot as an adult so I remember it more clearly! The one I'm after is definitely an illustrated children's book.

Bethany | 32 comments Bump - I've done some more googling but haven't found anything. I distinctly remember the star as being plump and healthy with a glow painted around it. Then, as it got sick, the glow surrounding it faded and it got thinner. Anyone???

Christina | 30 comments Gosh i remember this book too! Going to look in my attic to see if will still have it commenting so i don't forget

Christina | 30 comments Unfortunately we don't still have it and asking my mum she remembers it as Laura's star too (without prompting the name) as the previous commentor mentioned. I also remember a 3d yellow star but the dvd of lauras star has that so maybe there multiple editions with different illustrations or we're both remembering seeing the movie and putting them together? :) i didn't get to reread the book but i totally remember her family telling her she has to let the star go and she's really upset did that not happen in the copy you just read? Maybe I've just got some bias from reading your description though!

It's not a star but the moon get's weaker and smaller the more the little girl has it.

Bethany | 32 comments Thank you everyone for your comments! So far it hasn't been any of your suggestions - I googled and looked at the illustrations and sadly they're just not what I recall. Rainbowheart, that was a good suggestion but it was definitely a star shape not a baby!

It's possible that Christina is right and I am somehow remembering a video/DVD version of the story. The picture in my mind of the star is so vivid that it could be a video - I just thought I remembered a picture book!

It's definitely not Stardust (I remember illustrations and the star didn't have a face as far as I remember) - and Will, perfect suggestion, but unfortunately the illustrations are not what I recall!
Thank you all anyway!

The story summary sounds the most similar to what I remember by far! The illustrations are not what I remember but I wonder if it's the same story?
Thank you very much! I'm not 100% sure if that's it but it could be!
