Looking for a book I saw when I worked at Chatelaine magazine, between 1996-2005. The book was a fiction, crime novel that hadn't been published yet, and was submitted for review by Chatelaine's Book Editor. The plot involved a brother who was looking for the killer of his sister. The killer had a weird name and maybe a side-kick.

SPOILER ALERT:


At the end of the book, you realize that the sidekick is actually the brother, who was forced to torture and kill his own sister, then is sort of enslaved by the dominant killer. This book could be Canadian as Chatelaine didn't usually review books from other countries. I think the title might have had something to do with Night, and I think the preliminary (before it was punlished), book cover might have had a noose or a light bulb and noose on it. Not exactly sure.
