Kathy E | 3334 comments January Update

I finished 15 books this month, which might be a record number for me. Eleven books were for ATY, the rest were for classics challenges or side reads.

ATY
1. ATY not in title
Swimming Lessons by Claire Fuller
Enjoyable mystery and story of a family with secrets. 3.5 stars

2. One syllable last name
The Blue Fox by Sjon
Takes place in Iceland, a short book of historical fiction combined with magical realism. 3 stars

3. Book read because of something read in 2019
Girls in Their Married Bliss by Edna O'Brien
This is the 3rd book in the Country Girls Trilogy, books that were written in the early 1960s about two girls/women growing up in Ireland. 4.5 stars

5. First book in a series I haven't read
A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George
The first book in the Inspector Lynley series, this is well-written and suspenseful. I liked the interaction of Inspector Lynley and Detective Barbara Havers. 4.75 stars

9. Book you can read in a day
Glaciers - Alexis M. Smith
I expected more of a chick lit book about a woman who loves vintage clothes, but it was a serious book about relationships. 3 stars

12. Collaboration between 2 or more people
Romola - George Eliot
I listened to the audio so more than one person went into this book presentation. This was a long historical fiction book which had a lot of detail about 1400s Florence, Italy. 4 stars

13. Previous ATY prompt: Classic under 200 pages
Pietr the Latvian - Georges Simenon
The first in the Inspector Maigret series, I really liked this first book. Well-plotted and the character of Maigret is just wonderful. 4.5 stars

21. Related to Maximillian Hell
They Were Found Wanting by Miklos Banffy
Written by a Hungarian novelist, this is the second in The Writing on the Wall: The Transylvania Trilogy. It's about the waning days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the set-up to World War I. Romance, politics, fox and rabbit hunts, the rich. 4 stars

37 & 38: Binary opposites
Evvie Drake Starts Over - Linda Holmes
Chick-lit romance set in Maine. Evvie has gone through hard times. So has Dean, a former pro baseball player. 3.25 stars
Everything Under - Daisy Johnson
Gretel grows up with her mother living on a houseboat on the canals of Oxford. Then her mother deserts her when Gretel is a teen. Now Gretel updates dictionary entries, but the past comes back. 3.75 stars

39. Author's name you can't pronounce
The Winter Queen by Boris Akunin
Translated from Russian, this is a fun and clever mystery. 4 stars

Classics and Side Reads
The Pastures of Heaven by John Steinbeck
Well-written but I find Steinbeck's books so depressing. So - I liked the writing but didn't "enjoy" the story. 3.75 stars

The Song of Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
I liked this poem mainly because I've been to many places mentioned. 4.75 stars

The Clockmaker's Daughter by Kate Morton
This was a re-read for me for my IRL book club. I liked it more than I did the first time. I love Kate Morton's books which have different time lines, family stories, and relationships. 4.75 stars

The Seven Dials Mystery - Agatha Christie
A well-plotted mystery - a stand-alone, although some characters from The Secret of Chimneys are in this book. 3.5 stars

I really liked my mysteries this January.

Best Book of January
A Great Deliverance

I'm in a reading slump. I'm sick of listening to The Way We Live Now because it is so long! I DNF'd The Other Mrs. page 116 because a couple situations in the book seemed far-fetched and just silly. I'm not thrilled with Anne of Avonlea but it is a good clean uplifting story.
