The main character wanted to be a designer but was working in a shoe shop, dyed her hair bright pink and made her own clothes, boyfriend was a bad influence, making her late back from lunch breaks etc.
The cover of the book had a picture of a pink haired girl, been looking for this book for years!

Possibly teen, i must have read it 20 times as it was one of the few books i owned, driving me made that i cant recall the title!

The main character got a placement at a tailors and wore a shirt she had made herself but then later on realises its not good quality once she starts to learn proper tailoring, her boyfriend was a car mechanics

Yes definitely a YA and Romance, I think the main Character was 16/17 as it was the summer she had just left school.
