Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments What are you reading for this category?
I read On the Beach by Nevil Shute

What is the setting?
It is set in Australia after WW111

What about the setting seems inhospitable to you?
The people there are waiting for the radiation from the bombings of the war to reach them. The rest of the world have died from the radiation poisoning and the wind is carrying it down from the northern hemisphere to the southern hemisphere, so it is just a matter of time before it reaches them. There is no hope of evading it

3. What about the setting seems inhospitable to you? Self explanatory

I'm really enjoying this a lot more than I thought I would. There is a lot of dialogue which I realize I seem to like books with a lot of dialogue. It's going quickly and I like the characters and the flow of the book.

Endurance A Year in Space, A Lifetime of Discovery by Scott Kelly

2. What is the setting?
It is primarily set on the International Space Station.

3. What about the setting seems inhospitable to you?
They live very scheduled lives, including required necessary exercise, and they don't have much access to fresh food. Also, it's dangerous! Kelly writes about supplies not reaching them because of accidents. Yikes. I learned a lot--definitely recommend!

Tracy (tracky75) | 49 comments I picked The Personal History of Rachel DuPree by Ann Weisgarber. It's set in the South Dakota badlands sounds hot and dusty by itself, but the characters are also black and set in a time where racism made things even more difficult. It is an excellent read, very thought-provoking.

Karen | 94 comments Just finished Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, which is set in a barren wasteland, following a catastrophe which has nearly decimated humanity.

Everything about this setting is inhospitable.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3532 comments I read several apocalypse type books this year, but for this prompt I'm picking one of these two historical locations:

Out of the Dust - Oklahoma in 1934-34 during the Dust Bowl.

Mischling - WWII Auschswitz in Dr Mengele's area (twins).

I was surprised how many books I read that fall into this category (anything with war, pioneers, medieval-type fantasy worlds). Even the pleasanter places, like Regency England, had terrible hygiene and medical care. Not to mention no electricity, central heating, etc.

Me too. I read a lot books about dirty and hungry people. (Vikings, Appalachia, great depression, westerns, pioneers, antebellum, space, etc.) I thought the gold rush of 1849 would be an exciting time to live until I read a book about it from a girl's point of view. It was all mud, dirt and heat.
