It has since been solved. The book was The Monster Garden by Vivien Alcock.

Genre: Older children s/ Young adult fiction
Science fiction/horror.
Publication: Will be before 2000.
In the story the protagonist, a girl (older kid to teens) starts science experiment in her bedroom using some blood agar she gets given by her brother. I think she mixes stuff up in a jar or other such similar container. It ends up growing into some type of conscious blob that does a lot of squealing in a vulnerable/sinister way. If you ever saw eraserhead think of the chicken that ends up getting served at the dinner table.
New to this forum. I read a book many years ago when I was a kid and it really creeped me out, so much so that I never finished it. I’ve had a lingering urge to track it down and read it again ever since. If anyone can help please post any clues that might be useful.
I know this is a long shot. Apologies for the very vague description above. I'm afraid its all I can remember.
