Loney Baugher | 3 comments So I read this book around 2010 however it is older than that as it was my fathers book and he hasnt read a book since I was born (1991) roughly. Also he claims he is not familiar with the story so hes no help.
It's a story that follows a earth navy officer who has just been transferred to a spaceship where the crew is all of the fuck ups and undesirables from the rest of the intergalactic navy. This was an attempt to mitigate their accidents to just one place instead of across the entire fleet. The story proceeds to have the ship be the test subject of a crackpot scientists new experimental warp/hyper drive. This ship is selected because no one thinks the scientist is credible or sane possibly. Which the experimental drive happens to actually work and take the crew to the edge of a hostile alien space. This results in an intergalactic incident that almost starts a war. The whole story is laced with hilarity due to the unique personalities of the assorted crew. It was a relatively thin book.

Ive had suggestions that it may be hitch hikers guide to the galaxy and phule's company. After reviewing the descriptions for these it is neither, however phule's company is similar in the misfit regimen aspect however thats where the similarity ends.

Edit: Recent suggestions have been Lt. leary, Phule's company, and the SSMC reluctant. Unfortunately after reviewing these i have found that they appear to be somewhat similar but still not quite what i am remembering. Also the SSMC reluctant was to new to have been the story im looking for.

Yea unfortunately that's been the case over the last 8 or so years, no one is familiar with this story. I think the author may have been a small fry as far as stories go. I remember loving the book so much i tried to look up other stories by him and found nothing at all at time time that I read it (2010). Im starting to think it may have just been a dream I had since no one else is even aware of it.

Sarah Holland | 134 comments What do you remember about the various characters? Male, female, human, alien, any particular incidents?

This is ringing a very faint bell with me.

I remember it was a human crew and the main character/Captain of the ship was a man. I want to say David was the name or maybe that was part of the authors name. Im not for sure there. The story may not have been intended to be a comedy but i just remember being really entertained by the absurdity of a crew of misfits. I do not believe it had any sequels as i looked up the author back then and found nothing else really related to him and being frustrated there wasn't more in the universe to read about. its been long enough i don't really remember the interactions between the crew unfortunately though.

I want to say the story started out with the new captain of the ship lamenting about how he got assigned to the ship in the docks of the fleet before being shuttled out to his new ship.
