The bats were somehow guardians of the dragons or friends with them, and in the end the dragon’s bat friend ends up dying. The dragon lost his father and goes to talk to him in some spirit world. If humans drink dragon milk they are connected to the dragon somehow, and so the dragon befriends a boy who drank the milk. Then at the end all the kids drink dragon milk and get bonded with dragons.
